Directly inspired by Harriet Taylor Mill's work 'The Enfranchisement of Women' and influenced also by the work of her husband John Stewart Mill, the author Charles Anthony presents an argument for female legal equality within society.With the inscription 'To James Burns Esq from the author, thanks Anthony' to the half title.Beginning with the acknowledgement that 'the subject of the enfranchisement of women usually excites laughter and ridicule. That women should have votes is so novel a proposal, and therefore, to untrained minds, so absurd, that few can refrain from indulging in what are meant to be jokes and witticisms&apos.Anthony presents moral and practical arguments for women's suffrage, and concludes with the notice 'we do not believe that one half of mankind was born to exercise unlimited power over the other half', and that not until the vote is extended to women 'we shall see a more equal distribution of happiness&apos.With a former owner's inscription to the head of the front free endpaper. From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefntilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. In the publisher's original cloth binding. A vanishingly scarce first edition of this intriguing and shocking work of case files of cases of child tortures in Scotland, the copy of the dedicatee Candida Louisa the Marchioness of Tweeddale. The first edition.A vanishingly scarce work, with only two records of it being held institutionally, at the British Library and the National Library of Scotland.The copy owned by the dedicatee, with her ink inscription to the half-title. Candida Louisa, the Marchioness of Tweeddale, was the patroness of the Murrayfield Home. The frontispiece depicts her portrait. Candida Louisa was married to William Montagu Hay.The children's home at Murrayfield was erected in 1891 by the NSPCC, the Marchioness provided substantial support for the Home. The home was unusual for its time as it housed both boys and girls together up until the age of 14. Charmingly the house had its own pipe band that the children joined, known as the Lady Tweeddale's Pipers. The house closed down in 1908.An intriguing work, comprising of fourteen case studies of child abuse and neglect in Victorian Scotland. The shocking tales expose cases of child torture in Scotland, from children being drugged with chloroform by their mother, to the starvation of a child with learning difficulties, to the woes of the children of a miner with a drinking problem. Told in a dramatic and shocking manner this volume exposes the dark underbelly of Victorian society.This volume was undertaken by an Officer of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.Written anonymously.Illustrated with a frontispiece, nine plates, and four in-text photographs. He was a counter-revolutionary and wrote many tracts on that subject.
