Very scarce.ESTC citation number R29780.Advertisement to the first leaf.Collated, lacking the final four leaves, which contained a list of knights, citizens, burgesses, and barons of the Cinque-Ports, that were returned to serve in the Parliament. An interesting pamphlet containing the proceedings of the House of Commons in March 1681, relating to the Popish Plot.This work includes the speeches of lawyer William Williams, the examinations of conspirator Edward Fitzharris, who was later executed, and priest John Sergeant, and more.The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy formed by Titus Oates, in which he alleges that there was a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. This led to a fraught anti-Catholic hysteria in England and Scotland. At least 22 men were executed on Oates' accusations. Unbound pamphlet, as issued. Leaves are age-toned with some light marks, marks heavier to the advertisement leaf and the final leaf of text. Tidemark to the tail of the text. Collated, complete.Signed 'Philonomus' at the end of the final leaf, as called for.This very scarce work details the 1681 proceedings held at the Old Baily against Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, following his heading of the movement to bar James II from succession to the monarchy due to his Catholic faith. His sponsorship of the Exclusion Bill in 1679 led to two years of political struggle, but ultimately ended in defeat. During the subsequent Tory reaction in 1681, Shaftesbury was arrested for high treason, a prosecution dropped several months later.Despite the dropped prosecution, Shaftesbury feared re-arrest and execution, and fled to Amsterdam, where he died in 1683. Alongside the syllabus, example papers, the volume also includes the results of the exams. A very scarce volume published by the National Froebel Union, an association which validated examinations and set standards for teaching training courses at pre-school level in the UK. The National Froebel Foundation began as two separate bodies until the Froebel Society of and the National Froebel Union merged in 1938 to form the National Froebel Foundation. The present volume contains the syllabus of elementary and higher teacher examinations, statistical reports on those who took the exam in 1915, and example papers. With a sticker from the board of education reference library to the rear board. The volume also has some numbers in white to the tail of the spine. The volume previously belonged to Board of Education Library, and has several institutional marks as a result, including a library stamp, a stamp reading 'reverse stock', and some numbers inscribed in pen to the title page. This work discusses the Poor Law Commission, and it's creation in the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which led to the establishment of workhouses. This was known as the New Poor Law, replacing the Old Poor law of 1601. The Poor Laws was a tax on property imposed in each parish, used to try and relieve poverty. This work analyses how the Poor Laws protected that poor, and how the law actually worked in providing relief to the poor. With the bookplate of Riccardo Bachi to the front pastedown. Bachi was an Italian economist and statistician, and was the author of many economic works. The last one-hundred and twenty-eight pages are supplements and an index. Birmingham, John Thompson, 1791. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce first edition of this account of the 1791 Birmingham Riots, presided over by Richard Perryn. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. An account of the 1791 Priestley Riots, or the Birmingham Riots of 1791. The rioters were rioting against religious dissenters, most notably the controversial Joseph Priestley. The riots started with an attack on the Royal Hotel in Birmingham on the 14th July and ending on the 17th July 1791. Richard Perryn presided over the trials a the Warwick Assizes on the 23rd and 24th of August 1791. He was a Welsh judge who went on to become the baron of the exchequer. Bookplate to the front pastedown, stamp to the boards, stamp to the title page and stamp to the top, fore, and bottom edges, all from the Law Library of Los Angeles County.
