DAUMIER, Honore (1807-79), La France Se Preparant a Passer Ses Candidats Sous la Toise
DAUMIER, Honore (1807-79)
La France Se Preparant a Passer Ses Candidats Sous la Toise
Paris, Le Charivari, 1869. Lithograph. Small 4to (image size 8¼" X 10"). Very good. Light, even age toning. This is the May 3, 1869 second state of Plate 73 in this illustrated newspaper's "Actualites" series, and a strong clean impression. It depicts a statuesque crowned woman, representing France and resembling our Statue of Liberty, standing at right atop a scale with a measuring pole. Her right hand rests across her bosom and her left hand clutches the adjustable height bar near the top of the measuring pole. Behind her and at left stand a crowd of Frenchmen in suits and ties, all staring apprehensively at her. The caption reads, in translation, "France preparing to get her candidates to pass muster under the measure of standards." Immediately below the plate, at lower left, is printed "A. de Vresse, r.Rivoli, 55" while at lower right is printed "Lith. Destouches, r. Paradis Pre 28," and the stone number "16" appears in the base of the scale. A quite nice copy, printed on wove paper. (The rare first state was printed on newsprint stock and bore no caption, and the rare third state bore a different caption than the second state.) This print is displayed in a single cream matte and a ½" black wooden frame, overall dimensions 13" X 16". Very good. Slight bit of dampstaining at upper left and lower right of matte (not affecting print). Verso of frame bears the label of noted New York art gallery E. Weythe Art Books Prints. Daumier produced a vast number of social caricatures, roughly 4000 in number, many done for this famed publication. From the collection of former Illinois Senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (b. 1930), son of the Illinois governor of the same name (1900-65) and great-grandson of the U.S. vice president of the same name (1835-1914). DR 3708. .

DAUMIER, Honore (1807-79), Mais Garcon C'Est Indigne... Je Prends Un Verre de Bierre, Et on Me Prend Mon Chapeau...
DAUMIER, Honore (1807-79)
Mais Garcon C'Est Indigne... Je Prends Un Verre de Bierre, Et on Me Prend Mon Chapeau...
Paris, Le Charivari, 1839. Lithograph. 4to (8 1/8" X 11 1/8"). Very good. Faint age toning only. Tipped to backing board and cream paper matte, old but nice and faintly age toned. This is the December 7, 1839 lithograph (trimmed) of Plate 15 in this illustrated newspaper's "Emotions Parisiennes" (Emotions of Paris) series -- a bold, clean impression. A flustered elderly gentleman at left, hat pulled down over his eyes, addresses a waiter clutching a serving tray in a restaurant. Partial title cited above continues: "que voulez-vous que je fasse de ca; j'anne mieux une marmte: donnez-moi une marmite!" An attractive copy, with news text and advertisements on verso. "Le Charivari" (literally, "Hullabaloo") was a satirical newspaper that began in 1832 and continued until 1935, publishing reviews as well as political cartoons and caricatures such as Daumier's. .

(PICTURESQUE AMERICA / PRINT / SAN FRANCISCO), Golden Gate (from Telegraph Hill)
(PICTURESQUE AMERICA / PRINT / SAN FRANCISCO)
Golden Gate (from Telegraph Hill)
New York, D. Appleton & Co, 1873. Steel engraving. 4to (12½" X 9¼"). Near fine. Bit of age toning along some edges. Bright and attractive heavy stock steel engraving from the first edition (1872-74) of editor William Cullen Bryant's landmark "Picturesque America; Or, The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Waterfalls, Shores, Canyons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country," a hefty two-volume study of America's scenery in words and fine steel engraving considered highly influential to American tourism. "Golden Gate" was engraved by one of this work's most noteworthy engravers, Edward Paxman Brandard (1819-98), based on a landscape engraving by the noted artist James David Smillie (1833-1909). San Francisco is pictured at daybreak from atop this high point: A few pedestrians in the foreground gaze out over the building-covered hills in the middle distance, with the ship-filled bay extending out into the horizon. Most of the "Picturesque America" engravings were printed on regular text-weight stock, and a much smaller number (such as this example) on a fine, heavy stock. .

 (HOUGHTON, S.E. -- CARTE-DE-VISITE), Maj. S.E. Houghton...
(HOUGHTON, S.E. -- CARTE-DE-VISITE)
Maj. S.E. Houghton...
Celebrated 19th century midget. Uncommon tinted carte-de-visite photograph, 2 3/8" X 4", New York, NY, 1862. Very good. Decorative backstamp on patterned verso of "Ranger's Photograph Parlors, / 28 East Genesee St. / Franklin Buildings, / SYRACUSE, / N.Y." On the recto, within a fine gilt double-rule border, a 2 1/8" X 3 3/8" albumen full-length portrait of Houghton has been affixed, with fine print caption in red beneath: "Maj. S.E. Houghton, / 20 Years Old--Height, 31 Inches,--Weight, 41 lbs." The image is clear and there's a bit of hand tinting -- the top of a small table next to Houghton appears green and a flowing drapery next to that is purple. The card itself shows a slight bit of wear and mild age toning. Houghton, along with the better known General and Mrs. Tom Thumb and lesser lights such as Lizzie A. Reed, Houghton was another of the sideshow celebrities (many of whom adopted military titles) who satiated the American public's taste for novelty. This particular card was reissued a number of times both prior to and after this card, the only change being in his age. .

MAXIMILIAN I, Emperor, Group of Nine "Theuerdank" Woodcuts
MAXIMILIAN I, Emperor
Group of Nine "Theuerdank" Woodcuts
Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I likely penned the romanticized poem "Theuerdank" (roughly, "knightly thought") first published in 1517 himself, although his chaplain Melchoir Pfintzing and secretary Marx Treitzsauerwein are usually given partial author credit also. Its full title, auf Deutsch, is (take a deep breath) "Die geverlicheiten vnd einsteils der geschichten des loblichen streytparen vnd hochberümbten helds vnd ritters herr Tewrdannckhs," which translated as (another deep breath) "The adventures and part of the stories of the praiseworthy, valiant and most famous hero and knight, lord Teuerdank," and it tells of his 1477 journey to wed Mary of Burgundy in an Arthurian style filled with knights, castles and maidens. It was printed in Augsburg by imperial printer Hans Schönesperger in a special typeface designed for it that came to be known as "Theuerdank Fraktur." Of its 118 large woodcut engravings, several artists were employed: Leonhard Beck (12480-1552) created the most of them at 77, Albrecht Dürer's assistant Hans Schäufelein (1480-1540) created 20, and four other artists created smaller numbers. The first printing consists of 40 copies on vellum, followed by a larger edition in 1519 of approximately 300 copies on laid paper; seven more editions appeared over the next 175 years. Offered here is a group of nine illustrated leaves (pages 75, 77, 84, 88, 94, 100, 104, 106, 115) from one of the early editions. All are 13" X 8¼" and all are on heavy laid paper. All are very good or better, some with faint bits of foxing and a few faintly age toned; all are entirely free of edge tears and edge chips; only the last (p. 115) shows a bit of inoffensive dampstaining at the top (affecting neither text nor image). A magnificent assemblage of very scarce images, ideal for display, difficult to date precisely but likely early 16th century. .

JEFFERS, Robinson, Robinson Jeffers Centennial 1887-1987 Occidental College
JEFFERS, Robinson
Robinson Jeffers Centennial 1887-1987 Occidental College
Los Angeles, Occidental College Library, 1987. Poster. Folio (19¼" X 25½"). Very good. Two original mailing folds and quite minor edgewear. Attractive glossy poster on heavy stock celebrating the connection between the California poet (1887-1962) and his two years at Oxy (1903-04), where he edited the school newspaper and wrote poems for it. His poem "Rock and Hawk" fills the rightmost two-thirds of this poster, the slim left column listing Jeffers commemorative events: Symposium topics, lectures, poetry readings, exhibitions, etc. From the collection of noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), to whom it was originally mailed. For the Jefferson collector who has everything!.

(KINGLAKE, Alexander William -- 1809-91)
Carte-de-Visite
This influential English travel writer and historian is most remembered for his monumental 8-volume "Invasion of the Crimea" (1863-87); other titles include "Eothen, or Traces of Travel Brought Home from the East" (1844). KRAFT, Jack
Shoemaking in Early Illinois
N.p. Central Illinois Public Service Company, 1968. 14" X 11". Printed entirely in brown ink, this scene shows a cobbler at work on a shoe in a small and cluttered early Illinois cabin as a young girl perched on a stool observes and a bearded old man in the background reads. Very good. Faintest of edgewear. Probable sole printing. One in a series of prints issued in commemoration of the Illinois Sesquicentennial. .

(CURRIER & IVES -- LINCOLN, Abraham)
Abraham Lincoln, the Nations Martyr, Assassinated April 14th 1865
New York: Currier & Ives, n.y. [1865]. Folio (11" X 13½"). Good plus. Mild even age toning, with occasional small foxing; roughly ¼" wide age toned strip (mat burn?) running down full length of right margin (about ½" from right edge, but not affecting image area) -- homely but not terribly defacing; bottom margin has clearly been trimmed, coming up just beneath the "New York, Published by Currier & Ives, 152 Nassau St" line. Overall a clean, fairly attractive example of this desireable Lincoln lithograph, which is based on Anthony Berger's famed portrait taken in February 1864. .

(LINCOLN, Abraham)
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address: The Immortal Words of Abraham Lincoln at the Gettysburg Battlefield, November 19, 1863, on the Occasion of the Dedication of the National Military Cemetery...
N.p. [Springfield]: Illinois Commission, 1964. Broadside. Folio (30" X 23"). Fine. Superb broadside printing of the Gettysburg Address created specifically for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Below the large headline in deep blue, this typographically interesting piece depicts the Illinois State Historical Society's holograph version of Lincoln's masterpiece at center, at actual size, in deep purple. To the left of this facsimile the same text appears in four languages, each printed in a different color: Hebrew (deep purple), Japanese (blue), Greek (green) and French (red). To the right of the facsimile the text appears in another four languages, again with each printed in a different color: German (blue), Spanish (green), Russian (deep purple) and Latin (red). Ralph G. Newman, founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, was a member of the Illinois Civil War Centennial Commission and was no doubt instrumental in having this piece created. Interest in all things Lincoln and Civil War was high at this centennial time, and the New York World's Fair held a special Illinois Day as well. Walt Disney's famed Abraham Lincoln talking robot was debuted at this same World's Fair. The broadside was designed by Carl Regehr and printed by Gregg-Moore Lithographing Company. It is in exceptionally bright, fresh condition. .

(CIVIL WAR -- CONFEDERATE -- PRISONS -- LITHOGRAPH)
Libby Prison. The Only Picture in Existence. As It Appeared August 23, 1863
Richmond, VA, W. A. Mountcastle, 1882. Lithograph. Ca. 9" X 8". Very good. Well-known lithograph of the notorious Confederate prison in Richmond, second in infamy only to Georgia's Andersonville Prison. A clean and handsome example of this famous image of this prison, with six large tents in the middle ground. One soldier stands sentry in the foreground, another stands with arm in a sling and a handful of others, military and civilian, mill about near the tents and along the large brick structure; interestingly, three male civilians stand as a group in the foreground, one of them clutching the hand of a young girl, clearly posing for the photograph upon which this lithograph has been based. A front corner of the building still retains its original large "Libby & Son / Ship Chandlers & Grocers" sign. An attractive and highly detailed image. Housed in a modern (ca. 1970s) single cream matte and a simple ½" wooden frame with non-glare glass (overall dimensions 12" X 11½"). A simple but suitable presentation. .

(CENTURY MAGAZINE)
The Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits
New York, The Century Co, 1897. Folio. Blue cloth and decorative paper over boards portfolio housing full set of 10" X 13½" glossy prints. Near fine/very good. Images are largely superb and without edgewear, while the four-flap portfolio shows mild edgewear. Incredibly uncommon complete set of this large grouping of reproductions of steel-engraved portraits of a wide array of mostly 19th century world notables -- mainly head-and-shoulders, some half-length, most with facsimile signature underneath, many based on photographs and many engraved by noted English-American artist Timothy Cole. Subjects include (random assortment) Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Bismarck, Eleanore Duse, U.S. Grant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Thomas Jefferson, Leo XIII, Mozart, Florence Nightingale, Louis Pasteur, P.H. Sheridan, Leo Tolstoy, John Greenleaf Whittier.. (see "Alphabetical Index of Plates" image for complete list). A complete set of these is exceptionally scarce -- especially in such bright, exceptional condition and with the rarely-present portfolio in nice condition -- and would be nearly impossible to assemble. .

McKENNEY, Thomas L., and HALL, James, Major Ridge. A Cherokee Chief
McKENNEY, Thomas L., and HALL, James
Major Ridge. A Cherokee Chief
Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1836-44. Hand-colored lithograph. Folio (19½" X 14"). Very good. Mild overall age toning; several very small (¼") edge chips, all far removed from the image area. A handsome image from the first, folio-size edition of McKenney and Hall's renowned "History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs," published in three volumes between 1836 and 1844. Containing 120 colored plates (based on oil paintings by Charles Bird King, most of which were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian), this legendary trio is the major source for accurate images of many early Native American leaders. Later printings were reduced to an octavo size. Major Ridge was a leading foe of Thomas Jefferson's Indian removal plans, a noted Indian warrior, chief, judge and diplomat. A strong imprint with bold, fresh coloring. Scarce. .
