Charles Churchill (February 1732 – 4 November 1764) was an English poet and satirist, and he led an extremely interesting though difficult life. Well educated and the son of a preacher man, he became curate of the church of St Thomas à Becket in South Cadbury, Somerset, and received his priest's orders in 1756 taking over for his father, who passed away two years later. He married, unhappily, took up with drink and the companionship of Robert Lloyd before beginning to teach in a girls' school to escape poverty. Robert Lloyd's father's help kept him out of the debtor's prison. His Wikipedia entry notes that his didactic poem, The Actor, was followed by a successful launch of the Rosciad, published anonymously in March of 1761, which led to fairly savage critical review by Tobias Smollett, who argued that the poem wasn't written by Churchill but by three actors. An "Apology" followed, leading to excessive back and forth between poet and critics for the remainder of his life. The publisher, John Wilkes, was an adamant supporter of freedom of the press but was himself jailed for libel and other crimes. Volume I: viii [2], 12-176 pp. including a brief biography of the Reverend Mr. Charles Churchill, followed by seven parts of three poems and epistles. Seven parts to Volume II: [5], 6-180 pp. All in, a good start on grasping and appreciating the poetry and intellectual accomplishments of a complex man.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
