Illustrated with four plates and the odd in-text figure. Collated complete. Six issues of The Bookman, a monthly magazine published in London from 1891 until 1934 by Hodder & Stoughton. It was a catalogue of the current publications, as well as containing reviews, advertising and illustrations. This volume covers the issues over the period from October 1891 to March 1892. Contributors to this edition include: J. M. Barrie, Thomas Hardy, W. E. H. Lecky, Charles Lowe, Annie MacDonnell, A. T. Quiller-Couch, Lord Selborne, William Wright, and more. In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and minor bumping. Light fading to the spine with marks to the boards. Volumes 9-18, covering 1929-1939. Each volume runs from May to April the following year. A trade periodical servings as the 'official organ of the National Federation of Boot Trades Associations, representing Shoe Retailers, Bespoke Bootmakers and Repairers throughout the British Isles' Contains articles relevant to the trade including union debates and abundant with trade advertisements, often in colour. Also includes reports from trade meetings, advice to retailers and manufacturers, and wider news expected to affect the trade. A valuable insight into the nature of the trade and of advertising during these pre-war years, with examples of machinery and technique. Very scarce, held at the British library but without a digital record, and no others on sale. In red cloth bindings. Comprising Volume XXX (New Series Volume VIII) covering May to October 1885, and Volume XXXIV (New Series Volume XII) covering May to October 1887. Featuring numerous illustrations, including portrait frontispieces. Both volumes contain the sections 'Battles and Leaders of the Civil War&apos. Volume XXX contains 'Memoranda on the Civil War&apos. The Century Magazine was first published in the US in 1881, succeeding Scribner's Monthly Magazine. Its content, written by numerous contributors, included illustrated history articles, matters of recent interest, and literature. Its American Civil War series included contributions by generals and over 200 Northern and Southern participants of all ranks. It ceased publication in 1930. In half calf bindings. The first edition of the 1931-2 issues of the Chums magazine, last year the magazine saw a weekly publication. After July 1932, its publishing was reduced to monthly issues, and it became an annual publication in 1934. This magazine was a boys' weekly newspaper founded in 1892 by Cassell and Company and published by the Amalgamated Press after 1927. A very sought-after boys' paper due to its bright red pictorial covers. Containing serial storeies and series of short stories including 'Barracuda' by Paul Corydon, 'From Out the Ether' by L. C. Douthwaite and Eric MacDonald, and 'Wings of Doom' by George E. Rochester; long and short complete stories by various authors, including G. Clabon, Robert Harding, Eric Townsend, and Harcourt Parsons among others; A selection of articles on various topics including cricket, explorers, hunting, ships, and others; music and poetry; and photographic pages.A remarkable work of reference in brilliant condition, as uncommonly found. Illustrated with eleven coloured plates, of which one folding, and various other illustrations in text, as well as a colour folding frontispiece. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's full pictorial cloth binding. Externally very smart with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light marking to the front board. The spine and boards present only a hint of fading. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clan with a touch of browning, as usual. Illustrated with eleven coloured plates, of which one folding, and numerous illustrations in text, including the colour folding frontispiece. With a closed tear to the frontispiece. London, Edward Shackell, 1820-1888. Leather. A scarce and interesting collection of over one hundred and eighty issues of 'John Bull', bound into decorative volumes. A Sunday newspaper of the Nineteenth Century, the publication was founded by noted Georgian literary figure Theodore Hook, and was noted for its patriotic nature. It would continue until the early 1960s. The volumes and issues here date from between 1820 and 1828, including issue one, and offer hundreds of literary, political and economic insights into the era, as well as letters and advertisments. Volume I includes issues 1-55 (1820-1821) Volume III includes issues 108-1059 (1823) Volume IV includes issues 1-30, 32-39 and 41-52 (1824) of a new numerical issuing system Volume VIII includes issues 369-420 (1828) There are inkstamps throughout stating the price at four pence. In decorative quarter-morocco bindings with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally sound, rubbed to the extremities, joints, boards and backstrip with slight loss to some backstrips. The hinges are also tender. Internally, several endpages are partially detached, as well as creased. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages. With a folding plate depicting Mevagissey, Cornwall. A publication dedicated to the south-west of England. A lovely piece of local history, ' Doidge's Western Counties', this particular volume has a focus on Mevagissey, Cornwall. Segments include articles with hints for carving meat, a west country pictorial with aerial photographs, as well as fiction work, prose and poetry, and numerous adverts. Includes a illustrated folding plate, depicting the coastline of Mevagissey. No collation available, but appears to be complete. In publisher original binding. Externally, smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rubbing also the boards, spine and extremities. Small loss to the tail of the spine. Includes articles on art, coins, stamps, literature, silver, engravings, gems, musical instruments, pottery and interesting anecdotes on Leather bound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble front and end papers and many plates and illustrations. Please note this is Volume 1 only. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities including scratches to the leather and bumping to the corners. The binding is generally tight and firm with both covers and all pages securely attached. There are some pencil notations on a few pages. There is a tear to the cardboard page on which one of the plates is mounted but it does not affect the plate. One of the tissue papers protecting a plate is slightly creased. Very Good . Ill.: None. London , Otto, 1901-1910. Leather. A smartly bound set of this interesting and richly illustrated fine art magazine, with an interesting provenance. Comprising: Volume I (September-December 1901) to Volume XXVIII (September-December 1910), lacking Volumes XVII-XXII. The verso of each front free-endpaper has a bookbinder's stamp for Zaehnsdorf. Featuring numerous plates - some coloured, some tipped in, some folding and some with captioned guards - and illustrations in the text. The original front paper wraps have been bound into the rear of Volumes XXIII-XXVIII, one with 'Pleasaunce' in pencil. With the armorial bookplates of Lord Battersea to the front pastedowns of Volumes I-XVI, and the pictorial bookplates of Constance Battersea to the front pastedowns of Volumes XXIII. Cyril Flower, 1st Baron Battersea (1843-1907) was a British Liberal politician and art patron. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. Like his father, he became involved in property development, including Park Town, Battersea. He married Constance de Rothschild, the daughter of Sir Anthony de Rothschild, in 1877. The Flowers were great collectors and patrons of art, and were involved with the Pre-Raphaelite set. They also commissioned the architect Edwin Lutyens to develop two Norfolk holiday villas into a fashionable residence, 'The Pleasaunce', where they entertained lavishly. In half crushed morocco bindings, with marbled boards. Externally, very good indeed with just some shelfwear. Internally, generally firmly bound, although one plate in Volume I, and p251-254 and one plate in Volume XXV, are detached but present. Bright and generally clean, with just the odd spot prominent to the first and last few pages and the reverse sides of some plates. A highly attractive set. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Paris, Administration et Redaction, 1847-49. Leather. Two volumes of this mid-Nineteenth century bourgeois newspaper for women, 'Le Conseiller des Dames&apos. An illustrated periodical, with many hand-coloured plates and folding embroidery patterns. The first volume is December 1847-October 1848 and January 1849-October 1849. With three black and white plates, ten hand-coloured plates, four coloured cross-stitch plates, eleven yellow embroidery pattern plates dated November 1847 - October 1848 and two plates of sheet music to the 1847-8 volume. With nine yellow embroidery plates, two tapestry pattern plates, three cross stitch plates, one black and white folding plate, two music plates and eight coloured plates to the second volume (Jan-October 1849). The hand-coloured plates across both volumes are typically scenes of women and their fashion. Mai 1848 embroidery pattern plate, also has a pattern for negligee to the rear. Janvier 1849 embroidery plate has a sewing pattern to the rear. May has a sewing pattern for an outer garment to the rear. This beautifully illustrated periodical began in November 1847, and was edited by one Z Bourey. In addition to the many sewing patterns and plates representing fashion, there are articles discussing the February Revolution, the revival of clubs and the voice of women, female writers under the republic (written by Leonie Verrieres.) and much more. A quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the joints and extremities. Further patches of rubbing to the spine and paper covered boards. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. April 1848 yellow sewing plate to 1847-8 volume has had a small amount cut out. Small closed tear to the hand-coloured plate at page 133 of the first volume. Small chips to the edges of some of the yellow embroidery pattern plates. The September embroidery plate to the second volume is detached but present. Closed tear to the first music plate to the second volume. One emboidery plate has been completely removed to September and October of vol II. Occasional scattered spots to pages, with heavy spotting to pages 333-352 to the 1849 volume. Very Good . Liverpool, Cope's Tobacco Plant, 1889-1894. Cloth. A scarce collection of Cope's Smoke-Room booklets. An incomplete run of the original 14 volumes lacking volume 9, 11 and 12. With additional Cope pamphlet The Universal Soother. A series of general interest publicity and literature pamphlets published from 1889 by Cope Bros & Co. The company was started in 1848 by Thomas and George Cope and produced multiple brands of snuff, cigars, cigarettes and tobacco. The company became public in 1885 following the death of Thomas Cope. The company was known for employing mostly women and girls and providing better better working conditions than other employers and was praised by Charles Dickens. The pamphlets promoted the company's products and also smoking in general and was combative in nature to the Anti-smoking campaigns of the time. The pamphlets came under controversy in 1893 when John Ruskin took out an injunction against the company to stop them publishing his works. This set includes the John Ruskin volume. In original paper wraps. Externally, sound with rubbing, chipping and marks to wraps. All wraps with some foxing and some sunning. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. The magazine was founded by George Murray Smith in 1859 in order to compete with Dickens' hugely successful All The Year Round in terms of readership. As such, Murray was to hire William Thackeray as editor, who was noted as Dickens' main literary rival at the time. Includes illustrative plates and vignettes throughout, as well as a pull out illustration to each volume. In half-calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, Volume V is sound whereas Volume VI has a detached front board. There is also wear to the backstrips, boards and extremities, and some loss to the spine label on Volume VI.
