A really good source for less well known perspectives on American History of the period. Rather uncommon. Volume XXVIII, New Series Vol. VI, May 1884, to October 1884. Volume LVII, New Series Vol. XXXV.; November 1898, to April 1899. The Century Magazine was first published in the US in 1881, succeeding Scribner's Monthly Magazine. Its content, written by numerous contributors, included illustrated history articles, matters of recent interest, and literature. Its American Civil War series included contributions by generals and over 200 Northern and Southern participants of all ranks. It ceased publication in 1930. Each volume is in its original cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, both volumes are sound, though with some very light rubbing. Some light straining to the rear hinge of the second volume, and both hinges to the first volume are tender. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound and bright, though with the odd spot and handling mark. Bookseller's ink stamp to the front free endpaper of the first volume. Very Good . Ill.: Unamed. With fifteen plates in volume one and eighteen in volume two, including five folding plates. Volume I & II only of three. Part of a thirteen volume set making up The general magazine of arts and sciences, philosophical, philological, mathematical, and mechanical. Originally published between January 1755 and December 1758. Bound without title pages. Benjamin Martin (1704-1782) was a schoolmaster and travelling lecturer who invented several optical instruments. "Martin's most ambitious literary project was The general magazine of arts and sciences, philosophical, philological, mathematical, and mechanical. Designed to be published in about 120 sixpenny monthly numbers, beginning in January 1755, it was extensively advertised in London and provincial newspapers. A combination of a part-work encyclopaedia and a topical periodical, each number consisted of a few pages of five separate main works, with associated copperplates, plus a few pages of topical material, such as births and deaths, and prices of stocks. On completion of the project in 1764 the text and plates were bound into thirteen octavo volumes entitled: The Young Gentleman and Lady's Philosophy, The Natural History of England, A Comprehensive System of Philology, Mathematical Institutions (all 2 vols.), Biographia philosophica (1 vol.), and Miscellaneous Correspondence (4 vols.). Only the last had any resemblance to a periodical: the others were complete works in themselves." - DNB In full calf bindings. Externally, smart. King George V is No. 5049, volume 188 of the publication, and King George VI is number 5888, volume 220. In purple paper wraps. Externally, sound, though with some creasing and handling marks. Slight chipping to the 1936 volume. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the central pages of the 1936 volume are detached. Pages are mostly bright and clean, with just a few handling marks. A very scarce collection of two volumes of the London Journal of arts, sciences, and manufactures conducted by W. Newton, with numerous plates. Two very scarce volumes of The London Journal of Arts, Sciences, and Manufactures, and Repertory of Patent Inventions conducted by W. Newton, of the office for patents and other scientific men. The present collection comprising se conjoined series of Vol. XXXV of 1849, and Vol. XLI of 1852. This journal is comprised of early scientific developments and contemporary patents, these volumes including articles on Christian Schiele's invention of improvements in the construction of cocks of valves, also applicable to reducing the friction of axles, journals, and other rubbing surfaces; Edward Schunck, for improvements in the manufacture of malleable iron; Wiliam Edward Newton, for an improvement in the construction of wheels (being a communication); Andrew Shank's improved mode of giving form to certain metals when in a fluid or molten state; &c. Each volume is accompanied by full page plates with numerous figures to accompany the articles. Collated, complete with eighteen to volume I, and twelve folding to volume II. In uniform bindings. Lacking the half titles. In a half calf binding over marbled boards with new endpapers. Externally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing to the boards and spine, as well as minor chipping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. With some minor spotting to the first and last few leaves, particularly to the leaves of plates, otherwise the pages are generally very clean with only a touch of age toning, as usual. Each volume is accompanied by full page plates with numerous figures to accompany the articles. Collated, complete with eighteen to volume I, and twelve folding to volume II.  Very Good . Ill.: None.
