London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1811. Leather. The second edition of this selection of articles from the successful Gentleman's Magazine, edited by John Walker. The second edition of this work in four volumes in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste downs of all volumes. The Gentleman's Magazine was a monthly magazine founded by Edward Cave in 1731. It was successful for almost 200 years, declining only in the early 20th century until it closed in 1922. It was the first to use the term 'magazine' for a periodical, and counted Samuel Johnson among its contributors. Volume I contains researches, historical and antiquarian. Volume II contains two parts, the first concerning ancient and modern literature, criticism, and philology; the second about philosophy and natural history. Volume III contains two parts, the first comprising of letters to and from eminent persons; the second containing miscellaneous articles, including anecdotes of extraordinary persons, useful projects and inventions etc. Volume IV comprises of biographical memoirs, literary anecdotes and characters, and topographical notices. Each volume has an index to the rear. In a full calf binding. Externally smart, though a lightly rubbed to the joints, extremities and spines. Vols I, II and IV are a little rubbed to the front boards. Front hinges to Vols I, II and III are starting but remain firm; rear hinges to Vols I and IV are starting but remain firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a little offsetting to the page perimeters of the first and last few pages, and the odd spot. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Comprised of six hundred and thirty five essays published in the Spectator between 1711 and 1714, this interesting work offers a window into the political and cultural issues of the early eighteenth century. The Spectator was a daily periodical published by politicians Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele, and was one of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century. The publication was framed as the reports of Mr Spectator, and contained news, alongside cultural commentary on manners, morals, and literature. This new edition includes biographical information about the journal's contributors. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and spine, a little more so to the joints. Bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a small closed tear to the head, and a large tear to the tail. Some minor wear to the extremities. The front and rear hinges have failed, but the text block has been glued to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the front few pages are loose as a result of the failed hinge, and the the front endpaper, frontispiece, and pages xxiii to xxvi are disbound but present. McCrindle in 1959. McCrindle remained the general editor of this publication until 1977, when the magazine closed. Known for its vast mix of short stories and poetry by both new, young authors, and more prominent names as well as the feature of drawings, essays, and interviews. The present collection notably features the conclusion of Samuel Beckett How It Is in no. 13. Other notable contributions include John Fowles's poetry to no. 16; poetry by Anthony Burgess, Alan Sillitoe, Muriel Spark, and the story 'During the Jurassic' by John Updike to no. 21; 'The Hotel of the Idle Moon' by William Trevor to no. 23; Anthony Burgess' from "It is the miller's daughter" in 'Novel in progress section' of no. 24; poetry by Sylvia Plat to no. 31; a dialogue between Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady to no. 33&34; Chines poetry by Mao Tse-tung and an interview by J. G. Ballard to no. 39; &c. Anthony Burgess contributed to numerous numbers. The magazine also held an annual Erotica competition, which was open to fiction, poetry and illustrations. Charles Hamilton was one of the most prolific writers in history, famous for his boy's public school stories published in The Magnet magazine. Using a different pen depending on the character cast, this collection contains several of the Greyfriars School stories featuring Hamilton's best known characters Billy Bunter and Harry Wharton. All found in their unclipped dust wrappers. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with the unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, lovely with just some light bumping to the head and tail of all volumes. A scarce nineteenth century periodical, edited by Leigh Hunt. Hunt was an important critic, essayist and poet and co-founded the leading intellectual journal 'The Examiner&apos. This is one of many newspapers produced by Hunt, which includes 'The Reflector' and 'The Companion&apos. 'The Indicator ran from 1819-1821 and was a weekly literary periodical. Hunt wrote most of the content present to this volume, which includes reviews, essays, stories and poems. In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. A collection of twelve of the monthly periodicals from Brown's Book-Stall, edited by the publisher A. Brown & Co. covering the year 1894. The Christmas edition periodical for 1894 was the last one they ever published. Frontispiece depicting a the art saloon of Brown's bookshop. 1 plate depicting Dunnottar Castle by J. Beattie-Scott, supplement to "Brown's Bookstall," Xmas, 1894. Two photographs of the bookshop frontage in 1785 and 1894 accompanying the text. These periodicals contain articles about the history of book-buying and booksellers; advertisements for the various magazines they sell each month in the bookshop, and for Brown's fine art exhibition in their art saloon; descriptive portraits and obituaries of advertisers and contributors; amusing anecdotes concerning the men of Aberdeen; poetry; and book recommendations. They also contain some very charming Victorian advertisements for other companies. Alexander Brown's bookshop was opened in 1785, advertised as a "Booksellers, Bookbinders, Stationers, Circulating Library, Art Salon". Brown also served as Provost of Aberdeen between 1822-1823 and 1826-1827. In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the spine and extremities. This volume covers January-June 1893 of the fifth series and boasts a variety of articles on contemporary scientific development, on the diffusion of light, the fusion constants of The 'Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science' is one of the oldest scientific journals published in English. This issue has articles by Heinrich Rubens, the German physicist known for his measurements of energy of black-body radiation leading to Marx Planck's discovery of radiation law. His article in this work is titled 'on the refraction of Rays of Great Wave-Lenth in Rock-salt, Sylvite and Fluorite&apos. There is also an article by William Pole on colour-blindness. Pole was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society for his work in this scientific capacity. Other articles include 'A necessary modification of Ohm's Law' by Fernando Sanford, 'A New Method of Treating Correlated Averages' by leading statistician Francis Ysidro Edgeworth and 'The equilibrium of Vis Viva' by Austrian physicist and philosopher who developed statistical mechanics. There are further works of hydrolysis, sound-waves, magnetic fields as well as proceedings of the geological society. A truly fascinating and important work regarding scientific development and discoveries in the mid nineteenth century boasting numerous articles of all areas of science.
