A total of 24 magazines bound together. Bound in half straight grained morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. The magazine dating from the year 1899 features the serialisation of 'John Dobby's Better Nature' by Emily Pearson Finnemore. Whilst the magazine's dated from the year 1900 features the serialisation of 'Doctor Therne' by H. Rider Haggard, the adventure fiction writer. In addition to these stories, each magazine feature a series of suggested Bible Readings, articles discussing the progress of the Church internationally, and numerous other theological discussions. This very scarce work features a series of in-text illustrations throughout. In a half straight-grained morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally smart, with light patches of rubbing to the spine and extremities. Light fading to the spine. The odd spot to the fore edge. Internally firmly bound. July 1904 in well-preserved paper wraps covered with previous owner's dustwrappers with ink labelling. In two volumes. The Edinburgh Review has been the title of three distinct intellectual and cultural magazines. The best known, longest-lasting and most influential of the three was the second, which was published regularly from 1802 to 1929. With numerous contemporary advertisements to front and rear, one of which has original foldout detachable inquiry form still present. Gomersal Book Society labels to front with ink annotations. Heraldry today label to rear to one volume. In original paper wraps with handmade dustwrappers. Externally, paper wraps are in excellent condition with only slight age toning to spine and the odd slight mark. Wrappers have age toning, closed tears, slight loss and are brittle. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright but with slight scattered foxing, predominantly to first and last pages, spotting to text block edges, otherwise generally clean. Very Good Indeed . Two volumes in a half calf binding with marbled boards and end papers. Illustrated with eighteen plates to the first volume, thirteen plates to the second volume, and numerous in-text illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones, Joseph Pennell, Henry Ryland, Alfred Parsons, Herbert Railton and Walter Crane, among others. Collated, complete. These two volumes cover the years 1884 to 1885 and 1887 to 1888. The English Illustrated Magazine was a monthly publication that ran for 359 issues between October 1883 and August 1913. Features included travel, topography, and a large amount of fiction and were contributed by writers such as Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Stanley J. Weyman and Max Pemberton. When it began publication, it was the only illustrated competitor to Cassell's Magazine. With a Table of Contents to the front of each volume. In a half calf binding. Comprises the issues spanning October, 1886, to September, 1887. Includes an engraved frontis, seventeen plates, and numerous in-text illustrations. With decorative initial letters, and head- and tailpieces throughout. Contents include 'An Unknown Country' by Mrs Craik, and contributions by Algernon Charles Swinburne, F. Marion Crawford, and George Du Maurier. 'The English Illustrated Magazine' was a monthly publication that ran for 359 issues between October, 1883, and August, 1913. Features included travel, topography, and a large amount of fiction. Bound in half-leather with gilt lettering and marbled paper-covered boards. There is only some mild wear to the extremities, with just some mild rubbing, and slight bumping and discolouration. The front hinge is starting but still firm. The binding is tight and firm. The Family Economist includes a mixture of stories, poems and useful articles on subjects as diverse as German Cookery, Butter making, Certain Cure for Low Spirits, Health Resorts of Britain, Lodgings for Single Men, Marriage Vow, Out of Employment, Search for School, Trades and How to Learn Them and a great many others. Boys and Girls Treasury is a similar variety of articles and stories from the Ascent of Mount Blanc to Pelargoniums. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing, bumping to the corners and wear to the spine with slight loss. The binding is tight and firm with the boards and internal pages securely attached, although the front board has detached, the title page is missing and there are no endpapers. Numerous illustrated plates in the 1856 edition with illustration throughout both editions. The volumes include a wide range of articles, from fictional short stories to the state of politics with biographies and philosophical thought. Samuel Johnson's first regular employment as a writer was with The Gentleman's Magazine. Founded in 1731, it was published to inform businessmen and traders of the day on home and foreign affairs. It covered reports of bankruptcies, of ships lost, share prices, deaths and gardening as well cultural matters such as poetry and new books published. As the years went by the magazine was illustrated with engravings of battlegrounds, ancient monuments, new engineering or building works and other items of interest or of newly discovered parts of the earth. In a reverse calf binding and 1871 edition in cloth binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with dampstaining to boards of 1871 edition and marks to boards of 1856 edition. Head and tail of spine and corners bumped with some loss to backstrip of 1856 edition. Boards of 1856 edition held by cords only and front joint starting but firm on later edition. Volume XVII including issues number 823, 5th October 1895, to number 872, 12th September 1896. With The Herald Angels: Being the Extra Christmas Number of The Girl's Own Paper for 1895 to the rear. The Girl's Own Paper was a British story paper for young women and girls which was published weekly from 1880 until 1956 by the Religious Tract Society, which subsequently became the Lutterworth Press. The paper provided a mixture of educational articles, stories, poetry, music, answers to correspondence, and plates or illustrations. Most of the content was created by female writers, artists, and musicians, and as the years progressed the paper included information on serious careers for women and advice on style and dress. For some years The Girl's Own Annual was published as a collection of issues throughout the year. Bound in half calf with green cloth boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping resulting in minor loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Cracks to head and tail of the front joint with a small puncture mark to the front board. Boards slightly cocked. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd handling mark.
