A first edition of Henry Anderson Bryden's work on wildlife and hunting in Britain. Collated but lacking the plates called for at pages 7, 12, 28, and 29. Bryden's writings on travel, nature, and his hunting experiences allowed him to become a professional writer after enjoying careers as both a solicitor and a rugby player. In this volume, he describes his experiences hunting quails, bustards, heron, hares, and foxes in different locations across Britain. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Gervase Wheeler, Eversley Court, Eastbourne&apos. With a sticker from 'W.H.Smith & Son's Library' in London to the rear pastedown. Rebound in a quarter calf binding over red cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little bumping and wear to the extremities. The front joint is beginning to crack near the head and tail of the spine, less so to the rear joint. The spine is missing a little calf to the head. The front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the half title and a page of the index to the rear are a little loose. With light scattered foxing throughout the volume. Good . Ill.: J. Coster. Good .

A first edition, review copy of this beautifully illustrated work on fishing, presented to noted fisherman and Brighton police officer Jack Reece. A lovely work on fishing and angling, complete with excerpts, poems, and reminiscences. Written by Patrick R. Chalmers.  The first edition of this work. Patrick Reginald Chalmers was a renowned Irish writer, who wrote in a number of different areas, including field sports, deerstalking and horse racing. He also was a regular contributor to 'Punch' magazine and 'The Field', and wrote much poetry, on such topics as war, Irish life, hunting, and fishing.Complete with twenty-four illustrated plates by Norman Wilkinson. Collated and complete. A review copy of this work presented by the publisher to Jack Reece, fishing enthusiast and former Brighton police officer. Not only was Reece an avid shark fisherman, he also happened to be head of Brighton's CID at the time of the IRA bombing of the Brighton Grand Hotel in 1984. Reece's police force was responsible for the capture of Patrick Magee, the perpetrator of the bombing, and collection of vital evidence that helped sentence him. This copy includes Reece's bookplate to the front free-endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with just some light shelf wear and slight darkening to the spine. London , 'British Sports and Sportsmen', 1908. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of the comprehensive British Sports and Sportsmen. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Two volumes, complete. Can command up to £500 but slightly worn here and priced accordingly. This work contains an extensive number of biographies, with portraits, of eminent British sportsmen. With a presentation label from the Turf Club, presented by Lt-Colonel James S. Forbes, July 1949. The first British newspaper entitled The Sportsman began publishing from 1865, some six years after the Sporting Life. It ran until 1924. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. The bindings are generally tight and firm. The hinges are starting, and the inner hinges are strained. Several plates from each volume, and pages 221 and 323 of volume 2 ,are detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant bumping, rubbing, and discolouration. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with slight browning to the page edges, and scattered spotting. There are small closed tears and chips to intermittent pages, most prominent to the first and last pages. Page 51 of volume 1 has marginal sections missing, and several closed tears, with a repair over a small missing section and closed tear, as shown above. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
