A scarce collection of illustrations depicting fencing techniques, commissioned by the Italian sword and fencing master of the eighteenth century, Domenico Angelo. A scarce work, imprinted August 1783. With a simple title page 'Angelo's Attitudes of Fencing&apos.Vanishingly scarce, lacks letterpress text. Not on Library Hub or the ESTC. Comprising 43 plates, numbered 1-47. These plates were also later issued in 'The School of Fencing with a General Explanation of the Principal Attitudes and Positions Peculiar to the Art' printed in 1787. Both this work and 'The School of Fencing' contain paired plate numbers 2/3, 11/12, and 13/14, each being assigned as one plate Collated, this copy is lacking plate 23. Domenico Angelo was an Italian sword and fencing master. He was the founder of the Angelo family of fencers, and was pivotal in the shifting perception of fencing from an art of war to a sport. He emphasized the activity as a means of developing health, poise, and grace. Rebound, in a later calf binding. Externally, in an excellent condition with only some minor shelf wear to the joints. With a signature that reads 'Aubrey O'Brien' to the half title page. Aubrey O'Brien was a British Indian Army Officer who wrote numerous works on the county of India. Co-written with Reginald Bolster. This work is illustrated throughout with 28 plates. Collated complete. Plates include images of the animals hunted on the trip. With a publisher's catalogue to the rear of the volume. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Compiled from articles in "Bell's Life in London, and Sporting Chronicle" an English weekly sporting paper published as a pink broadsheet between 1822 and 1886, and "Boxiana" a series of prizefighting articles written by the English sportswriter and journalist Pierce Egan, and part-published by George Smeeton in the 1810s. A delightful work of fiction by sports writer Charles James Apperley, with thirty eight coloured plates A delightful work of fiction by sportsman and sports writer Charles James Apperley. Publishing under the pseudonym Nimrod, Apperley often covered horse races, hunt meets, and other sporting events for the Sporting Magazine. This is one of his best-known works, brought to life by Henry Alken's colour illustrations, with thirty eight plates, collated and complete. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, generally sound. A little rubbed to the boards and spine. Bumped to the head of the spine with three closed tears and a little loss of cloth. A small strip of cloth has also been lost from the tail of the spine. With tears in the cloth at both the front and rear joints, the joints are a little tender but still reasonably firm. Both front and rear hinges are starting but firm. Internally, the binding is rather tender and the text block is held together by cords towards the front. The pages between page 48 and 64 are especially loose, as are pages 113 to 128, pages 54 to 58, and pages 151 to 154 are disbound but present. Pages are a little age-toned towards the fore edge and are lightly foxed throughout. Good Only . Ill.: Henry Alken. Good Only .

Lionel Edwards was British painter who specialised in painting hunting scenes and British country life. His work was frequently featured in books on hunting, such as this one, and in popular magazines such as 'Country Life' and 'The Sphere&apos. This work on fox hunting was written by 'Sabretache' (a pseudonym for Albert Stewart Barrow). Sabretache wrote many works on the subject of hunting including 'Hunting the Fox' and 'A Gentleman and his Hounds&apos.
