An interesting work looking at angling, a method of fishing by means of a fish hook. The work sets out to describe and advice on all aspects of fly-fishing, angling, and trolling. The author focuses mostly on trout fishing.Written by Thomas Christopher Hofland. Hofland was an artist and teacher, who was a keen angler who combined his passion with his skill for landscape painting.Illustrated by the author with a frontispiece, twenty-one plates, and in-text woodcuts.This new edition revised and enlarged by E. Jesse.Collated, bound without one plate, to face page 211. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, and a small closed tear to the head of the front joint and spine. Light marks to the boards, with a slightly larger mark to the front board. Spine is lightly faded. Very small chip to the rear joint. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, pages 81-96 are almost detached. Contemporary owner's inscription to the title page. Bound without the errata and the folding plate. Facsimile of folding plate is loosely inserted. Retaining the folding leaf rules scheme of laws for the management of a School of Arms and without folding plate at page 232. A scarce work, written by an authority on fencing, Sir William Hope. Hope is notable for his criticism of the French Small-Sword system he personally trained in. He felt that the true Art of Defence lay in the English back-sword method. This work explains his theories, and is his most famous. With the dedication to the Earl of Marischal, William Keith. ESTC reference no: T72974. A smart copy of this important fencing treatise.
