London, James Nisbet, 1825. Leather. A religious text by Reverend Thomas Brookes. A scarce work. A pocket sized, full leather volume, with gilt detailing to the spine. This is a religious text, intended for young women and men. This volume has green, marbled pastedowns and end papers. There is some wear to the extremities, including rubbing to the corners of the boards and fading and cracking to the spine. The rear board and all internal pages are securely attached, although the front board is attached loosely by the cords. The majority of the binding is tight and firm, although the cords are visible between the front, blank-end papers. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, apart from the occasional mild handling mark and very minor brown spot. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

Illustrated throughout with some fifteen engraved plates, including a frontispiece and an engraved title page. New edition, to which is added an appendix. Richard Burnham (1711 1752) was an English clergyman and biographer. Born in Guildford, Surrey, he collected the dying sayings of more than a hundred pious persons and compiled the Pious Memorials, published in 1753 after his death. The Pious Memorials were reprinted at Paisley in 1788 with additions, and again enlarged in 1789. It was reprinted with a continuation by the Rev. George Burder in 1820, forming a large octavo volume, and a there was a later stereotyped reprint. Having said all that however, all editions seem now unobtainable. Rebound in a tree calf binding. Externally, smart, though with some wear to the extremities, some rubbing, and cracking to the joints. Hinges are strained. Internally, firmly bound. Private ex-libris blindstamp to front free-endpaper. Paper repair to plate facing page 507. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting throughout, and some offsetting from the plates. London, Jacobi Flesher, 1650. First edition. Leather. Two very scarce works on the grammatical lexicon of the Hebrew psalter. 'Lyra Prophetica' is a first edition, and is one of Bythner's major works. It was not translated into English until 1836. Bound to the rear is a 1650 copy of 'Lingua Eruditorum' which was first issued in 1638. This work being to the rear is as called for. Part II has a separate title page, also dated 1650, and has separate pagination and register, with the new pagination starting on B1. The Hebrew text is interspersed with Latin commentary. There are 352 pages to the first work, with page 352 misnumbered 342 as called for. The errata leaf, which is usually G4 of the second work, has been trimmed down and pasted to the verso of G3. Both works are written by Victor Bythner, a Polish Hebraist, grammarian and university teacher in England.ESTC reference no: R230929. In a later full calf binding. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. With over four hundred in-text illustrations to the fifth treatise by Peter Mark Roget. With eight plates to the first volume by Kirby, and fifteen to the second, collated and complete. The Bridgewater Treatises are a series of eight works on natural theology written by leading nineteenth century scientific figures. The present collection contains treatises by Thomas Chalmers, John Kidd, Peter Mark Roget, and William Kirby, who were all appointed by the President of the Royal Society to fulfil the 8th Earl of Bridgewater's request for a work on the 'Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation&apos. The series was widely read upon its publications, and made an important contribution to Victorian discussions of the relationship been religion and science. The treatises by Chalmers and Kidd are bound in one volume, whilst those by Roget and Kirby are spread across two. The selection comprises mixed editions, including a first edition of the treatise by William Kirby, a second edition of Peter Mark Roget's treatise, and third editions of Thomas Chalmers and John Kidd's contributions. Prior owner's ink inscription to the series title in across all six volumes, 'Wentworth W. Butler. February 1856.' In a contemporary calf binding with decorative spines. Externally, very smart. Martin Chemnitz was a highly influential Evangelical Lutheran Theologian and Protestant reformer who is credited as a key figure in the continuation of Lutheran thought and doctrine. Chemnitz was a prolific writer, publishing a wide variety of work regarding theological doctrine, Biblical studies and religious history, as well as a highly influential and success autobiographical work. This work is considered to be one of the most important works relating to The Council of Trent. The Council of Trent was an ecumenical council of the Catholic Church, during which it issued condemnations regarding Protestantism, as well as clarifications regarding a number of key Catholic doctrine including original sin, Mass, scripture and Biblical Canon. Alain Daniélou was a French historian, intellectual, musicologist, Indologist, and a noted western convert to and expert of Shaivite Hinduism. Daniélou was the author of over thirty books on Indian music and culture. He received several awards for his work on music and was also a photographer and painter. He studied Indian classical music in Varanasi with Shivendranath Basu and played the veena. He also translated some of the works of Swami Karpatri by whom he was initiated into Shaivism under the name Shiva Sharan (Protected by Shiva). Windham, J. Byrne, 1804. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of The Opinion of Dow by the eccentric American preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Bound in cloth. Lorenzo Dow, 1777 – 1834, was an eccentric itinerant American preacher. He was an important figure in the Second Great Awakening. He was also a successful writer. His autobiography at one time was the second best-selling book in the United States, exceeded only by the Bible. Dow's enthusiasm sustained him through the incessant labors of more than 30 years, during which he preached in almost all parts of the United States. A fierce abolitionist, Dow's sermons were often unpopular in the southern United States. His later efforts were directed chiefly against the Jesuits; indeed he was in general a vigorous opponent of Roman Catholicism. In a cloth binding. Externally, there is almost no wear to the extremities. Internally the pages have browning, that becomes significant to the first and last few pages, and scattered spots.
