Previously owned by F. T. Colby with bookplate to front pastedown, also with an ink inscription directed to 'The Rev. C Rev. J. G. Joyce; Sir John Maclean; Arthur Jewers; Rev. William Ince; Philip Massinger; Shrewsbury School and Various Publishers include: Bristol - Jefferies and Sons; Oxford - E. Baxter; Oxford and London - James Parker and Co; London - Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans. These are various extracts bound in one volume from different publishers, some with no publication details. Some pamphlets include extracts in Latin and Greek. The pamphlets are as follows according to handwritten title: 1. Joyce on Fairford Windows 2. Will of Tho. Wandsworth Maclean. 3. English Bicknor 4. Parting Words. Ince 4. Parting Councils 5. Inaugural Lecture 6. Shrewsbury Prize Exercises Also with an eight page extract from 'A Brief Account of the Brasses' inserted between 'English Bicknor' and 'Parting Words' and an extract of six pages from 'The Bondman' by Philip Massinger inserted between 'Inaugural Lecture' and 'Shrewsbury Prize Exercises&apos. In further detail the included extracts are, in order: Remarks Upon the Fairford Windows by the Rev. J. G. Joyce, F.S.A. Rector of Stratsfieldsaye. Read in Fairford Church, 30th August, 1877 before the Bristol and Gloucestershire Arachaeological Society and Reprinted from the Transactions of the Society. Which includes, along with the list of prizes, related extracts, some in Latin, others in Greek and English, including 'Shakspeare. Comedy of Errors. Act 1. Scene 1.' in dual English and Greek, translated by Andreas Morley, Reg. Scholae Salop. Alumnus. With a list of 'Honours Obtained by Shrewsbury Men, in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, since the Preceding Speech-day, June 3 1845.' to rear. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities and slight rubbing and marks to boards. Rear hinge tender. Internally, text block generally firmly bound. Bright but with occasional spotting and handling marks, to rear blanks, some ink marks, slight foxing and minor loss due to hinge. If the handwritten list of contents is accurate, there are three extracts absent to rear, possibly due to hinge or possibly removed when bound. Including works on the Tel-E-Yadoudeh Jewish mound and the monuments of the Hittites, the work contains plates, diagrams and fold-outs throughout, offering an interesting insight into religious archaeology of the nineteenth century. There is no title page to this volume. Rebound in half-calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally quite smart, there is some wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Roy Wagner (1938-2018) was an American cultural anthropologist, best known for The Invention of Culture, which is considered a classic of ethnography and theory. This work is based on the time he spent observing the Daribi people and their religion. He explores their culture and provides discussion of the habu ceremony, in which participants summon ghosts for reconciliation. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. London, Anon, 1642. First edition. Paperback. A very scarce royalist treatise by David Owen. The first edition of this work under this title, issued on the eve of the English Civil War. Originally issued in 1610 as 'Herod and Pilate Reconciled&apos. The pamphlet discusses puritans and the divine right of Kings. The first chapter states 'The first Chapter proveth by the testimony of scripture, that Kings are not punishable by man, but reserved to the judgment of God&apos. There are references to scripture to the margin to support Owen's points. ESTC reference no R36621.The re-issuing of this work coincided with the start of the Civil War in England. Charles I was nearly bankrupt and tensions were high in Parliament and in the royal household. This is an important piece of contemporary royalist propaganda and is extremely scarce. In the original paper covered boards. Externally, very smart. Light shelfwear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Minor fading to the final leaf. In this very scarce guide, Reginald Winslow clarifies the rules and rights of contemporary Nonconformists A very scarce copy of Reginald Winslow's handbook for nonconformists, previously owned by Liberal Party politician Henry Wilson. In this volume, Winslow has gathered the statutes and decisions affecting contemporary Nonconformists. Nonconformists were those who did not follow the Anglican Church, and by the late 19th century, the term included Reformed Christians, Baptists, Methodists, and Quakers. By law and custom, nonconformists were restricted from many spheres of public life, and this compilation is designed to clarify the rules and rights of Nonconformists. Prior owner's ink inscription to half title, 'Henry J. Wilson&apos. Wilson was a British farmer, industrialist, and Liberal Party politician for Holmfirth in 1885.
