A Selection of Nine Pamphlets on Varying Topics, Mostly to Do with Christianity and Religion.
London, Various Publishers, c1846-78. Leather. A collection of nine pamphlets, being extracts from various sources, bound in one volume with a handwritten title page listing content. Previously owned by F. T. Colby with bookplate to front pastedown, also with an ink inscription directed to 'The Rev. C Rev. J. G. Joyce; Sir John Maclean; Arthur Jewers; Rev. William Ince; Philip Massinger; Shrewsbury School and Various Publishers include: Bristol - Jefferies and Sons; Oxford - E. Baxter; Oxford and London - James Parker and Co; London - Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans. These are various extracts bound in one volume from different publishers, some with no publication details. Some pamphlets include extracts in Latin and Greek. Shrewsbury Prize Exercises Also with an eight page extract from 'A Brief Account of the Brasses' inserted between 'English Bicknor' and 'Parting Words' and an extract of six pages from 'The Bondman' by Philip Massinger inserted between 'Inaugural Lecture' and 'Shrewsbury Prize Exercises&apos. In further detail the included extracts are, in order: Remarks Upon the Fairford Windows by the Rev. J. G. Joyce, F.S.A. Rector of Stratsfieldsaye. Read in Fairford Church, 30th August, 1877 before the Bristol and Gloucestershire Arachaeological Society and Reprinted from the Transactions of the Society. With a table listing the details of the windows and an 'In Memoriam' notice on Joyce to rear. II. - The Last Will and Testaments of Thomas Wandsworth, last Prior of Bodmin, with a prefatory notice. - By Sir John Maclean, F.S.A. Hon. Member of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, &c. Gloucester by Sir John Maclean of Bicknor Court, F.S.A. Two Inaugural Lectures Read in The Divinity School, Oxford, in Michelmas Term, 1878 by William Ince, D.D. Regius Professor of Divinity, and Canon of Christ Church; Late Sub-Rector and Tutor of Exeter College. Massinger The Bondman, Act IV. Scene II in dual English and Greek, translated by Philippus Perring Reg. Scholae Salop. Alumnus to end of passage in Greek. This is quite possibly relate to the following extracts included in The Prize Exercises of Shrewsbury School. The Prize Exercises of Shrewsbury School. June 2, 1846. Which includes, along with the list of prizes, related extracts, some in Latin, others in Greek and English, including 'Shakspeare. Comedy of Errors. Act 1. Scene 1.' in dual English and Greek, translated by Andreas Morley, Reg. Scholae Salop. Alumnus. With a list of 'Honours Obtained by Shrewsbury Men, in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, since the Preceding Speech-day, June 3 1845.' to rear. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities and slight rubbing and marks to boards. Rear hinge tender. Internally, text block generally firmly bound. Bright but with occasional spotting and handling marks, to rear blanks, some ink marks, slight foxing and minor loss due to hinge. If the handwritten list of contents is accurate, there are three extracts absent to rear, possibly due to hinge or possibly removed when bound. Although extracts, the rest of the volume seems complete as it was intended. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
