Study conducted by French barrister Louis Jacolliot in search for the "Indian roots of western occultism". An undated copy, dated from a copy listed on Copac from the University of Oxford Libraries. This book was originally published in English in 1875. Translated from the French by Williard L. Felt.Containing references to an unknown Sanskrit text which he invented after mixing elements from the Upanishads, Dharmashastras, and Freemasonry. He also expresses his belief in a lost Pacific continent. An interesting work on occultism and spiritism, an uncommon volume. Internally in lovely condition. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally with shelf wear, considerable damp marks to boards. Previous owner's gift inscription to title page dated 1910. Internally, firmly bound. From the library of the 'Lodge of Harmony', Fareham. This lodge was first warranted in 1796 and is lodge no 309. The lodge of Harmony merged with moderns to become the United Grand Lodge of England. Limited edition, number 390 of 500 copies sold in aid of the Provincial Grand Master's 1994 Festival for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution. Signed by the Provincial Grand Master of the Lodges of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, James Edward Bullen who wrote the foreword to this work. This work was compiled by F D Laugharne and to the preface notes that the Lodge has changed a lot since W L Finemore's history of the lodge published nearly sixty years earlier. A very smart copy of this history, which traces the tradition of Freemasonry in the jurisdiction of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor shelfwear to the extremities. Several handling marks to the rear board. Signature of the Provincial Grand Master to the dedicatory leaf with his photograph. Being Volume I only, as was published at the time. Volume 1. All published at the time. A second volume was not published until 1957. An exceptional copy of this rare work. With a dedication leaf to the recto of front endpaper, 'Presented to the Very Eminent Knight The Rev Canon C W Barnard, Great Prelate With the Esteem and Affection of the Members of the Richard Coeur de Lion Preceptory No 212. November 6th 1925.' Charles William Barnard was the rector of Sutton Coldfield and was initiated into Alma Mater Lodge No 1644 on 16th March 1900. He passed in the June of that year and raised on the 12th October 1900. He was then installed as Worshipful Master in 1906. Throughout his life, Barnard was a member of at least seven craft lodges, many Chapters and several Orders. Illustrated throughout, with many portraits of notable Lodge Members and designs of many lodges. Collated, complete. This history of the Ireland Grand Lodges was issued following the celebration of the bicentenary of the foundation. A comprehensive history of Freemasonry in the context of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to the front board and to the spine.
