Thomas Gibson Bowles
Maritime Warfare.
London, W. Ridgway, 1878. Cloth. A very scarce work by Thomas Gibson Bowles, criticizing the Paris Declaration Respecting Maritime Law of 1856. Whilst the diplomatic policy was agreed between fifty five nations, the declaration was primarily written by France and Great Britain with the aim to abolish privateering and regulate the relationship between neutral and belligerent and shipping. Within the policy, they agreed on three major points: free ships make free goods, effective blockade, and no privateering, but in return for surrendering the practice of seizing neutral goods on enemy ships, France insisted that Britain abandoned its Rule of 1756, prohibiting neutral assumption of enemy coastal and colonial trade. Within this work, Bowles (best known as the founder of the magazines 'The Lady' and 'English Vanity Fair') argues the Declaration resulted in a series loss of power, and calls for that power to be regained. A second edition copy. Featuring a tipped in bookplate of a 'T. A. Walker' to the front pastedown of this copy, possibly that of Thomas Alfred Walker (1862-1925), an Anglican clergyman, jurist and antiquary who served as a fellow, Dean, Steward, Tutor, Lecturer, and Librarian at the Peterhouse college, Cambridge. In the original embossed blue cloth, with gilt title to the front board and spine. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to extremities. Slight rubbing to extremities of rear board. Front hinge strained after endpapers, but reasonably firm. Slight tidemark to upper extremity of front pastedown and free-endpaper. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown, offset to facing page. Slight offsetting to first and last few pages. Internally firmly bound.
