A. T. Wilson [attributed]
A Sketch of the Political History of Persia, Iraq and Arabia, with Special Reference to the Present Campaign
Calcutta, Superintendent Government Printing, 1917. Cloth. A scarce copy of this important guide prepared for the Indian Expeditionary Force "D" providing an account of the political and historical context of the British Mesopotamian campaign of the First World War. Scarce work. Printed for official use only, containing highly confidential subjects at the time of printing. An important pamphlet prepared at the request of Officers from the Indian Expeditionary Force "D," the largest of the Indian Army forces to serve abroad during the First World War. In the Mesopotamian campaign they served under the command of Major General Barrett and, after a string of early successes, the campaign was delivered significant setbacks at the Battle of Ctesiphon and the Siege of Kut. The pamphlet provides accounts of the political status of Mesopotamia and neighbouring countries throughout the war, exploring the trend of policy in the Arabistan province of Iran, the Bakhtiari and Pusht-i-Kuh tribes of Iran, as well as Central Arabia. This work is commonly attributed to Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson, a British soldier, colonial administrator, Conservative politician, writer and editor. Wilson served under Percy Cox, the colonial administrator of Mesopotamia during the First World War and an Iraqi revolt in 1920. In the original green cloth wrappers. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and minor rubbing to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpaper dated 2/4/17. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
