A very scarce and concise history of the Napoleon Bonaparte's Jena Campaign, in which he defeated Prussia, with ten folding maps to rear of text. First and only edition, very scarce. Illustration includes ten folding maps, some of which are in colour, which are loosely inserted into a packet which is adhered to the rear paste down. This is a history of Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaigns of 1806, with this work focusing upon the Battle of Jena. In this year, the Fourth Coalition took up arms against him because Prussia was worried about growing French influence. However, Napoleon swiftly defeated Prussia through the Battle of Jena, as well as Auerstedt, and was able to ultimately defeat the Russians in 1807. Contents include 'The Opposing Armies', 'Command and Administration', 'The Prussian Plans' and 'The Movement on Jena&apos. Written by Lieut. Col. H. M. E. Brunker, who wrote a range of works on Napoleon's military campaigns. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. A bit of bumping to the extremities of boards and along the head and tail of spine, with a few marks to boards. Fading on the spine. Light spotting to text block. A later printing of this biography of Major-General Charles George Gordon, British officer and administrator known for his command of the "Ever Victorious Army", instrumental force in the suppressing of the Taiping Rebellion; this moment in history gained him the nickname of 'Chinese Gordon' and honours from the Emperor of China. He also took part in the Crimean War and took honourable action in Khartoum during a serious revolt, which saw him organise a citywide defence that lasted for almost a year before he was killed. Written by Lieut-General Sir William GF. With the bookplate of one John Foster to the front pastedown of all volumes. The bookplate features the family crest as well as two ships. The motto 'Amor Omnia Vincit' translates as Love Conquers All. To the bottom of the bookplate is written 'Thacker Spink, Calcutta&apos. This work was originally published between 1742 and 1744. It was still being issued up to a hundred years after his death. John Campbell was a Scottish historian. He had written several popular historical works before his The Lives of British Admirals and Other Eminent British Seamen. However, this work was his most popular. It was originally four volumes and was expanded into eight by John Berkenhout and Redhill York. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Particularly to the spines and joints. Singe marks to several spines of multiple volumes, Worst to volume II which has singing to the rear board as well. Heavy rubbing to the head and tail of all spines as well as patches to the boards. Crack to rear joint of volume II. Front hinge to volume III is tender with cords showing. Crack to head of front joint to volumes IV and V. Small crack to head of rear joint to volume V. Volume VI is lacking backstrip. Rear joint to volume VI is tender and front joint starting but firm, as is hinge. Front joint to volume VIII is cracked and starting but firm. Front hinge to volume VIII is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Water damage internally to volume VI resulting in tide marks throughout and cockling, not affecting text.
