His fiction generally de-emphasizes narrative in favor of careful description and characterization. His early novels such as The Mezzanine and Room Temperature were distinguished by their minute inspection of his characters' and narrators' stream of consciousness. Out of a total of ten fiction books, he also wrote three erotic novels: Vox, The Fermata and House of Holes. Among others, Baker has published articles in Harper's Magazine, the London Review of Books and The New Yorker. " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket .

In the late 1960s, he produced a variety of experimental short stories (or "condensed novels") , such as those collected in the controversial The Atrocity Exhibition (1970). In the mid 1970s, Ballard published several novels, among them the highly controversial Crash (1973) , a story about symphorophilia and car crash fetishism, and High-Rise (1975) , a depiction of a luxury apartment building's descent into violent chaos. BARRIE, J. M. (JAMES MATTHEW), The Greenwood Hat Being a Memoir of James Anon [1885-1887]
BARRIE, J. M. (JAMES MATTHEW)
The Greenwood Hat Being a Memoir of James Anon [1885-1887]
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has several edge tears, nicks and some spots of rubbing, and a couple of small chips. "Following a job advertisement found by his sister in The Scotsman, he worked for a year and a half as a staff journalist on the Nottingham Journal. Back in Kirriemuir, he submitted a piece to the St. James's Gazette, a London newspaper, using his mother's stories about the town where she grew up (renamed "Thrums"). The editor "liked that Scotch thing" so well that Barrie ended up writing a series of these stories. They served as the basis for his first novels: Auld Licht Idylls (1888) , A Window in Thrums (1890) , and The Little Minister (1891). The stories depicted the "Auld Lichts", a strict religious sect to which his grandfather had once belonged. Modern literary criticism of these early works has been unfavourable, tending to disparage them as sentimental and nostalgic depictions of a parochial Scotland, far from the realities of the industrialised nineteenth century, seen as characteristic of what became known as the Kailyard School. Despite, or perhaps because of, this, they were popular enough at the time to establish Barrie as a successful writer. Following that success, he published Better Dead (1888) privately and at his own expense, but it failed to sell. His two "Tommy" novels, Sentimental Tommy (1896) and Tommy and Grizel (1900) , were about a boy and young man who clings to childish fantasy, with an unhappy ending. The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing read the former in November 1896 and wrote that he "thoroughly dislike[d it]". " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

0394481399 BARTH, JOHN, Chimera
BARTH, JOHN
Chimera
New York, NY: Random House, Inc, 1972. 1st Trade Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0394481399. Illustrated by George Giusti. Cover Art; First Trade Edition. First Edition stated on copyright page. This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jackaet is clean and bright, but has a bit of light toning, especially to the corners and edges. The front flap of the dust jacket has two creases. This book is a National Book Award winner. Barth's work is characterized by a historical awareness of literary tradition[11] and by the practice of rewriting typical of postmodernism. He said, "I don't know what my view of history is, but insofar as it involves some allowance for repetition and recurrence, reorchestration, and reprise [...] I would always want it to be more in the form of a thing circling out and out and becoming more inclusive each time." In Barth's postmodern sensibility, parody is a central device. Around 1972, in an interview, Barth declared that "The process [of making a novel] is the content, more or less." Barth's fiction continues to maintain a precarious balance between postmodern self-consciousness and wordplay and the sympathetic characterization and "page-turning" plotting commonly associated with more traditional genres and subgenres of classic and contemporary storytelling." But when Trout Fishing in America was published in 1967, Brautigan was catapulted to international fame. New York, NY: W. W. Norton, 1995. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0393037606. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is a very thin strip of fading to the top spine end of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. Much of the Commodore takes place on land, in sitting rooms and drafty castles, but the roar of the great guns is never far from our hearing. Aubrey and Maturin are sent on a bizarre decoy mission to the fever-ridden lagoons of the Gulf of Guinea to suppress the slave trade, but their ultimate destination is Ireland." "In the early 1990s the series was successfully relaunched into the American market by the interest of Starling Lawrence of W. W. Norton publishers, attracting critical acclaim and dramatically increasing O'Brian's sales and public profile in the UK and America. Paul D. Colford notes that when O'Brian "visited the United States a few weeks ago, fans waiting to meet, lunch and have tea with him included Walter Cronkite, Sen. Dirk Kempthorne (R-Idaho) and Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who invited O'Brian to attend a session of the high court. Hollywood also wants a piece of the press-shy storyteller." The novels sold over 3 million copies in 20 languages. In its review of 21 (published in 2004) , Publishers Weekly says that over 6 million copies have been sold. Thus O'Brian's greatest success in writing, gaining him fame, a following and invitations to events and interviews came late in his life, when he was well into his seventies, and accustomed to his private life." In a review for the Guardian newspaper, renowned author Claire Messud wrote, "The book has attracted such acclaim not simply because it is beautifully and powerfully written, but because it convincingly pulls off an immense imaginative risk. Butler has not entered the significant and ever-growing canon of Vietnam-related fiction (he has long been a member) —he has changed its composition forever." Butler began writing novels on the Long Island Rail Road while working as a publicist for Fairchild Publications. "Every word of my first four published novels was written on a legal pad, by hand, on my lap, on the Long Island Rail Road as I commuted back and forth from Sea Cliff to Manhattan," Butler has said of his early writing.
