CHAMBERS, ROBERT W., The Streets of Ascalon Episodes in the Unfinished Career of Richard Quarren, Esq.
CHAMBERS, ROBERT W.
The Streets of Ascalon Episodes in the Unfinished Career of Richard Quarren, Esq.
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1912. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. There is one spot of discoloration on the rear book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name and address on the front endpaper. "Robert was first educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and then entered the Art Students' League at around the age of 20, where the artist Charles Dana Gibson was his fellow student. Chambers studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and at Académie Julian, in Paris from 1886 to 1893, and his work was displayed at the Salon as early as 1889. On his return to New York, he succeeded in selling his illustrations to Life, Truth, and Vogue magazines. Then, for reasons unclear, he devoted his time to writing, producing his first novel, In the Quarter (written in 1887 in Munich). His most famous, and perhaps most meritorious, effort is The King in Yellow, a collection of Art Nouveau short stories published in 1895. This included several famous weird short stories which are connected by the theme of a fictitious drama of the same title, which drives those who read it insane. E. F. Bleiler described The King in Yellow as one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. It was also strongly admired by H. P. Lovecraft and his circle. "Chambers returned to the weird genre in his later short story collections The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice and The Tree of Heaven, but none earned him as much success as The King in Yellow. Some of Chambers's work contains elements of science fiction, such as In Search of the Unknown and Police! ! ! , about a zoologist who encounters monsters. " (From Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "His main themes include the duality of human nature: sometimes dramatized as the disparity between a character's decorous social persona and inner corruption, and sometimes as a conflict between two characters (often brothers) who embody the salient aspects of both – light and dark, flesh and spirit. Many of his works also express a nostalgia for a vanishing way of life (as evoked by the mythical St. Botolphs in the Wapshot novels) , characterized by abiding cultural traditions and a profound sense of community, as opposed to the alienating nomadism of modern suburbia. CHURCHILL, THOMAS, Centralia Dead March
CHURCHILL, THOMAS
Centralia Dead March
Willimantic, CT: Curbstone Press, 1980. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. This book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. THe book covers have some l ight rubbing and wear to the spine ends, spine joints, and cover edges. The text pages are clean and bright. "Centralia Dead March is a documentary novel based on the struggle of a radical union to establish better working conditions and solidarity among lumbermen, miners, railroad and migrant workers during the early part of this century. Wesley Everest, Ray Becker, Bert and O. C. Bland, Loren Roberts and Eugene Barnett lived and worked around Centralia, Washington and were active in the Wobblies, the International Workers of the World. Because of its doctrine of worker unity, its stand against racist hiring practices and its call for militant tactics, the I. W. W, the most feared union among the ruling classes, was subject to massive arrests and numerous court actions. When the I. W. W. Led the northwester woods out on strike during the First World War because wages had dropped while production increased, they were branded "traitors" in the local papers. On November 11, 1919, during the first Armistice parade, a mob of Centralia "patriots" raided the union hall. In the conflict, three soldiers were shot by workers defending their property; Everest was beaten, castrated, and hanged from a bridge; and seven workers--including Becker, the Blands, Roberts, and Barnett--were sentenced to from 25 to 40 years. Centralia Dead March recreates these historical events and examines the long-term consequences of the violence and repression." (From Amazon). Very Good .

(It has no relation at all to the later television series of the same name. ) It is a story of a Massachusetts family with a father who has political ambitions for his sons. As with The Last Hurrah, it is not a roman à clef but the clan is certainly reminiscent of the Kennedy family. "Edwin O'Connor, the author of The Last Hurrah, summed up the era in his final novel, All in the Family: 'Corruption here had a shoddy, penny-ante quality it did not have in other states....Here everything was up for grabs and nothing was too small to steal....In our politics there seemed to be a depthless cushion of street-corner cynicism, a special kind of tainted, small-time fellowship which sent out a complex of vines and shoots so interconnected that even the sleaziest poolroom bookie managed, in some way, however obscure, to be in touch with the mayor's office or the governor's chair.'
