LACKING any original endpapers and preliminaries to the title page, including the frontispiece portrait of Joseph Hooker. All other illustrations/maps present as called for. A detailed account of The Battle of Chancellorsville during the Civil War, detailing the planning for the campaign, the preparations of the armies, the plan of the campaign and movement of the cavalry, maneuvers, conduct of the battle, the injuries to Hooker and Jackson, etc. Included is an appendix of official orders, telegrams and testimony. Bates was a noted historian and educator, author of the key work 'History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-1865.' GOOD condition. Minor uneven fading and rubbing to the covers. Text block solid but toned. A few stray pencil marks on the fore edge, with a stray mark to the Jackson illustration. Faint dampstain on the first page of the preface. Maps cropped close along the fore edge but complete. Good/No Jacket.

EX-LIBRARY in FAIR condition. In red library buckram. Pockets, pastedowns and interior markings present. Library label in blind at the foot of the spine. Light fading, scuffing and soiling to the covers. New endpapers present. Text block solid, with minor scattered soiling. Some chipping to the title page along the fore edge, with a tape repair at the top. All three fold out illustrations with EXTENSIVE wear, having been backed with paper/cloth tape, as well as bearing moderate to extensive repairs. The first plate (frontis) is almost completely torn in two along one fold, with many other chips and tears present to the fold-outs. Best considered a reading/reference copy. Fair/No Jacket.

To which is added an alphabetical list of the officers killed and wounded, from 15th to 26th June, 1815, and the total loss of each regiment, with an enumeration of the Waterloo honours and privileges, conferred upon the men and officers, and lists of regiments, etc. entitled thereto. Illustrated by a panoramic sketch of the field of battle, and a plan of the position and movements, with those of the Prussians, traced. By a Near Observer. Stated fifth edition. Half-vellum binding with patterned red cloth covers. Gilt decorations along the spine, with title and date set against red backgrounds. Cxliv, 140 pp. With an extra leaf cxxv*, cxxvi*, preceding the other leaf also bearing these page numbers. Text is continuous and complete in that section. Collated and complete. With two fold out maps and a large fold out panoramic illustration of Waterloo, all colored. As the title states, a detailed account of the Battle of Waterloo, drawn from various sources, and paying special attention to the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon. With a large bookplate from William Hillier, 4th Earl of Onslow, a British politician and former Governor of New Zealand. Also present is an ownership signature from George Augustus Sala, perhaps the Italian-English writer and journalist. In GOOD condition. Covers slightly bowed, with minor soiling and darkening to the vellum. Cloth worn along the lower front edge, with some loss, perhaps due to insect exposure. Cloth faded. Text block solid with scattered minor foxing and soiling throughout, as well as a few minor pencil notations. Some notations regarding provenance on a rear endpaper. Frontis map with some foxing and darkening, cropped a little close at the lower margin. The Fold out panorama also bears some foxing, and has extensive paper and cloth tape repairs to the reverse, as well as creasing present. The last map has a 2 inch diagonal tear near the edge attached to the binding, with minor foxing and ghosting, as well as pencil notations to its blank side. Good/No Jacket.

A member of the 12th New York Cavalry, Lieutenant Cooper chronicles both the battle near Plymouth, North Carolina that led to his future imprisonment, as well as his time in Confederate prisoner of war camps. Cooper prefaces the account by stating that as an officer, he was not subjected to the harsh treatment and living conditions that most of the prisoners were, but also clarifies that he believes the conditions in the camps were deliberately poor. Includes a list of officers held as prisoners of war in Macon, Georgia in 1864. GOOD condition. General fading and minor soiling to the covers. Minor scuffing, slightly heavier to the rear panel. Cloth frayed and worn at the corners and head and foot of the spine. Interior hinges starting to crack and separate, although still intact. First front endpaper MISSING.
