Fontaine, Resianne
A Hebrew Encyclopedia of the Thirteenth Century. Natural Philosophy in Judah ben Solomon ha-Cohen’s Midrash ha-Hokhmah. Edition, Translation, Study. Officina Philosophica Hebraica Volume 3 (Series: Studies in Jewish History and Culture, Volume: 74)
Leiden - Boston, Brill, 2023. XIV, 783 pp. As new. Hardcover. Originally written in Arabic, the author, Judah ben Solomon ha-Cohen, who was inspired by Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed, translated his own work into Hebrew in the 124os in Italy when he was in the service of Frederick II. The part on natural philosophy edited and translated in this volume is the first Hebrew text to draw extensively on Averroes’ commentaries on Aristotle. Over several chapters, Resianne Fontaine explores Judah’s ambivalent attitude towards Aristotelian philosophy. ISBN: 9789004518582

FONTAINE, T.A.M.
In defence of Judaism: Abraham Ibn Daud. Sources and structures of ha-Emunah ha-Ramah. (Studia Semitica Neerlandica)
Assen, 1990. [10], 335 pp. Internally very good. Softcover, sewn. Spine discolored. Middle Ages. This study presents a thematic investigation of Ibn Daud's philosophical treatise "ha-Emunah ha-Ramah" [The Exalted Faith]. It examines the question whether current interpretation is correct in assuming that the thesis is primarily concerned with working out a synthesis between philosophy and religion, or whether, as Ibn Daud indicates at te beginning of the book, it is basically concerned with the problem of free will. In order to answer this question the author examines the structure of Ibn Daud's philosophical work by analysing its topics and their interrelation, and by paying attention to Ibn Daud's use of Biblical verses. Furthermore the study focuses on the Jewish and Islamic sources on which Ibn Daud drew, as well as the way in which he incorporated the philosophy of the Islamic Aristotelians al-Farabi and Ibn Sina into his own thought. FREUDENTHAL, GAD (ed.)
Studies on Gersonides: A Fourteenth-Century Jewish Philosopher-Scientist (Collection de Travaux de L'Acadimie Internationale D'Histoire Des Sciences)
Leiden, Brill, 1992. XXII, 422 pp. Free endpaper with handwritten dedications. Else very good.Orig. cloth with dustjacket. R. Levi ben Gershom (Gersonides, 1288-1344) is one of the greatest and most original figures of Medieval Jewish thought. He wrote numerous works in philosophy, science and biblical exegesis. Some of his scientific works, most notably his highly innovative Astronomy, were translated from Hebrew into Latin and could thus reach non-Jewish scholars. The twelve studies collected in this bilingual volume (English and French in equal parts) offer for the first time a comprehensive overview and assessment of Gersonides' work in astronomy, mathematics, logic, natural science, and psychology. Gersonides' contributions are analyzed within the context of contemporary philosophy and science in Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin. New light is also shed on the reception of Gersonides' work within European science. The volume includes a very extensive bibliography of writings by and about Gersonides by Menachem Kellner. Gruber, Mayer I
Rashi's Commentary on Psalms (Brill Reference Library of Judaism.)
Leiden, Brill, 2004. XVI, 914 pp. Owner's signature inner frontcover. Else internally very good and clean. Hardcover, lower corner slightly bumped, some scratches on backcover. Heavy volume. For shipment outside Europe, extra postage required. This new volume in the Reference Library of Judaism faithfully presents the complete Hebrew text of Rashi's (1040-1105) psalter commentary according to Vienna Heb. ms. 220 together with a fully annotated scientific translation into contemporary idiomatic English. The supercommentary places one of the finest commentaries by the single most influential Hebrew biblical exegete in dialogue with the full gamut of ancient, medieval and modern exegesis. The supercommentary identifies Rashi's sources and pinpoints the exegetical cruces to which Rashi responds, defines the nuances of Rashi's exegetical, linguistic and theological terminolgy, and guides readers to use the translation to gain access to the Hebrew. The introductory chapters constitute the most up-to-date discussion of the scope of Rashi's literary legacy and of the history of research. They include highly original discussions of the Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah commentaries commonly attributed to Rashi and fully annotated English translations of 1) Rashi's programmatic essay on the problem of homonymity in biblical exegesis; 2) Rashi's commentaries on liturgical poetry; 3) one of Rashi's liturgical poems, and 4) the famous medieval poem, which declares Rashi to be the Torah Commentator par excellence. The final result is a valuable resource for students and scholars alike. ISBN: 9789004132511
