Edinburgh and London, Young J. Pentland , 1889. Cloth. A rare collection of three lectures delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in February 1888, on suppuration and septic diseases. Featuring four diagrammatic illustrations. Sir William Watson Cheyne was a British surgeon and bacteriologist, who pioneered the use of antiseptical surgical methods in the United Kingdom, as well as abdominal surgery. His other works include Antiseptic Surgery: Its Principles, Practice, History and Results and Manual of the Antiseptic Treatment of Wounds. Signed by Sir Gilbert Barling, and featuring his bookplate to the front free endpaper. Barling was an English physician during the early 20th Century. At the outbreak of the First World War he was 59 and placed his services at the disposal of the Royal Army Medical Corps, acting as consulting surgeon in the Southern Command, subsequently being posted at the rank of Colonel to the Western Front from October 1916 to August 1917. His service to King and Countrymen earned him the Companion of the Bath (military) in 1917 and in 1919 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In August 1919 King George V conferred upon him a Baronetcy and the College of Arms granted his Coat of Arms some three months later. In a Birmingham Medical Institute binding. Rebound in a cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, sound, with very light rubbing to the spine and extremities. Front hinge is very slightly strained. Whilst geological surveys were previously published on a county by county basis, these three volumes collect the memoirs of different geologists involved in the survey of Great Britain. Includes a comparison of British mining with that of Saxony, Hungary, and France. With geological maps, and engravings of British fossils. With a small pocket for a library index card to the front pastedown of all three volumes. Volume I lacks the ticket, but it is present in both parts of Volume II. Paris, Bechet Jeune, 1827. First edition. Leather. An important surgical work in a beautiful tooled binding by the Binder to the restored Bourbon King of France. A beautifully bound, first edition of this surgical work by celebrated surgeon Jean Civiale. With five folding plates and one folding table to the rear. Collated, complete. This work is in a binding by Rene Simier. Simier was one of the major nineteenth century French binders his name is gilt stamped to the spine. Simier acquired notoriety through becoming the binder of the Empress Marie-Louise and following the Restoration, binder of the king. This surgical work regards a method to aid the removal of stones from the bladder. This method is known as lithotripsy and involves using a lithotrite to perform transurethral therapy. Civiale invented this form of surgery, which is outlined to this work. Transurethral lithotripsy was the first known minimally invasive surgery to crush the stones in the bladder without having to open the abdomen. Civiale was a pioneer of evidence-based medicine and this work highlights his ability and methodology. With the bookplate of one J R Kirkup to the recto of front endpaper and with his occasional pencil annotations to the margins, as well as further notes to the verso of front endpaper. Loosely inserted is an extract from an English work regarding one Mr Costello and the tools used for 'Breaking Stones in the Bladder&apos. An important surgical text from the nineteenth century regarding lithotripsy. In a full straight grained morocco binding. Externally, excellent condition with tooling to the boards and to the spine. Binder's gilt stamp to the spine, Rene Simier. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, J R Kirkup. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Closed tear to the first plate no larger than four inches. Closed tears to the margins of plates II-IV only affecting the border of the image. Closed tear from the outer margin in to the image of plate V no larger than five inches. A lovely rebound first edition copy of Richard Tappin Claridge's best known and most widely cited publication, 'Hydropathy; or, The Cold Water Cure, As Practised by Vincent Priessnitz&apos. Whilst completing a successful career as a prominent asphalt contractor and captain in the Middlesex Militia, Claridge is best known today for his promotion of hydropathy (or hydrotherapy); a Cold Water cure that involves the use of water for pain relief and treatment. Claridge is widely credited with introducing the methods of the founder of modern hydrotherapy Vincent Priessnitz to England, and for initiating the populist movement of the time. Claridge was first introduced to hydropathy attending Priessnitz's establishment at Graefenberg in 1841. Crediting the methods Priessnitz had created for saving the life of his daughter, Claridge avidly began to promote the system, writing this work 'Hydropathy; or, The Cold Water Cure, As Practised by Vincent Priessnitz' in 1842. The text was largely formed from notes on his own experiences, observations of other patients' experiences, observations of the methods employed, and from his discussions with Priessnitz and other patients during his stay in Graefenberg. A scarce first edition copy, with a preface dated 21 January 1842, as called for. With a frontispiece plate depicting several stages of Priessnitz's Cold Water Cure. Rebound in a lovely quarter cloth binding, with a morocco label tipped to the spine and attractive marbled paper over boards. With publisher's advertisements to the front of the work dated 'January, 1842', and another to the rear of the work. Rebound in a lovely quarter cloth binding with marbled paper over boards. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear to extremities. Bookseller's label tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but bright with the odd spot and handling mark to the occasional page. Light scattered spots to portrait frontispiece place.
