HAVIL, JULIAN
Nonplussed! Mathematical Proof of Implausible Ideas
Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2007. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. ISBN: 0691148228. A bright, solid book. DJ is clean and crisp. ; B&W Illustrations; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 196 pages; "Math--the application of reasonable logic to reasonable assumptions--usually produces reasonable results. But sometimes math generates astonishing paradoxes--conclusions that seem completely unreasonable or just plain impossible but that are nevertheless demonstrably true. Did you know that a losing sports team can become a winning one by adding worse players than its opponents? Or that the thirteenth of the month is more likely to be a Friday than any other day? Or that cones can roll unaided uphill? In Nonplussed!--a delightfully eclectic collection of paradoxes from many different areas of math--popular-math writer Julian Havil reveals the math that shows the truth of these and many other unbelievable ideas.". 3034801033 HOFER, HELMUT & EDUARD ZEHNDER, Symplectic Invariants and Hamiltonian Dynamics
HOFER, HELMUT & EDUARD ZEHNDER
Symplectic Invariants and Hamiltonian Dynamics
Basel, SW: Birkhäuser, 2011. Reprint. Softcover. ISBN: 3034801033. A bright, solid book, card covers are clean and crisp, text unmarked. ; Modern Birkhäuser Classics; 9.25 X 6.10 X 0.81 inches; 341 pages; "The discoveries of the last decades have opened new perspectives for the old field of Hamiltonian systems and led to the creation of a new field: symplectic topology. Surprising rigidity phenomena demonstrate that the nature of symplectic mappings is very different from that of volume preserving mappings. This raises new questions, many of them still unanswered. On the other hand, analysis of an old variational principle in classical mechanics has established global periodic phenomena in Hamiltonian systems. As it turns out, these seemingly different phenomena are mysteriously related. One of the links is a class of symplectic invariants, called symplectic capacities. These invariants are the main theme of this book, which includes such topics as basic symplectic geometry, symplectic capacities and rigidity, periodic orbits for Hamiltonian systems and the action principle, a bi-invariant metric on the symplectic diffeomorphism group and its geometry, symplectic fixed point theory, the Arnold conjectures and first order elliptic systems, and finally a survey on Floer homology and symplectic homology. The exposition is self-contained and addressed to researchers and students from the graduate level onwards.". 0521857015 MANSFIELD, ELIZABETH LOUISE, A Practical Guide to the Invariant Calculus
MANSFIELD, ELIZABETH LOUISE
A Practical Guide to the Invariant Calculus
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0521857015. A bright, solid book, grey glossy boards as new, text unmarked ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 247 pages; "This book explains recent results in the theory of moving frames that concern the symbolic manipulation of invariants of Lie group actions. In particular, theorems concerning the calculation of generators of algebras of differential invariants, and the relations they satisfy, are discussed in detail. The author demonstrates how new ideas lead to significant progress in two main applications: the solution of invariant ordinary differential equations and the structure of Euler-Lagrange equations and conservation laws of variational problems. The expository language used here is primarily that of undergraduate calculus rather than differential geometry, making the topic more accessible to a student audience. More sophisticated ideas from differential topology and Lie theory are explained from scratch using illustrative examples and exercises. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers working in differential equations, symbolic computation, applications of Lie groups and, to a lesser extent, differential geometry.". MORRISON, MARGARET
Unifying Scientific Theories Physical Concepts and Mathematical Structures
New York: Cambridge University Press, 2007. Reprint. Softcover. ISBN: 0521037603. A bright, solid book , text unmarked. Card covers are clean and crisp. ; 8.80 X 5.90 X 0.50 inches; 272 pages; "This book is about the methods used for unifying different scientific theories under one all-embracing theory. The process has characterized much of the history of science and is prominent in contemporary physics; the search for a "theory of everything" involves the same attempt at unification. Margaret Morrison argues that, contrary to popular philosophical views, unification and explanation often have little to do with each other. The mechanisms that facilitate unification are not those that enable us to explain how or why phenomena behave as they do. The book emphasizes the importance of mathematical structures in unification, and claims that despite this common feature theory unification is a multi-faceted process for which no general account can be offered.". His specialities were geometry, logic and philosophy of mathematics. In this volume, three new hypotheses are presented. The first one concerns the existence and the development of philosophy of mathematics in Arabic, independently of traditional metaphysics and philosophy. It is mainly concerned with the logic of discovery and the logic of proof. The second hypothesis concerns the development of a new chapter in mathematics devoted to geometrical transformations. The close connection between astronomy and mathematics, used to develop this last chapter, is discussed in the third hypothesis. The book presents a critical edition done for the first time and based on all available manuscripts, French translations, and long historical and mathematical commentaries.". Small tears and light chipping, damp stain top DJ spine. ; A tight solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector, text unmarked. ; B&W Illustrations; 8.60 X 6.40 X 1.50 inches; 420 pages; "The perception of symmetry in art and in nature has been appreciated since antiquity, with development of the underlying laws tracing back at least to Pythagorean times. By the end of the eighteenth century it was realized that the immense variety of natural crystal shapes could be accounted for on the basis of a rather small number of symmetry operations, of which some were equally applicable to biological systems. The mathematical theory of symmetry continued to mature throughout the last century, culminating in the independent discoveries in Russia, Germany, and England that a total of only 230 independent ways exist in which the operations of rotation, reflection, and translation can be combined to transform three-dimensional geometrical objects into themselves. Derivation of the 230 space groups depends ultimately on restricting the meaning of symmetry to that of a property of purely geometrical figures. A. V. Shubnikov and his collaborators, over the past three decades, expanded this concept of symmetry to include the sign of transformation operations.". Very Good- in Good+ dust jacket .
