HALLIWELL, JAMES ORCHARD .
The Early History Of Freemasonry In England. By James Orchard Halliwell, Esq., F.R.S. Second Edition.
London: John Russell Smith, 4, Old Compton Street, Soho Square. M.DCCC.XLIV. [ 1844 ]. 0. A very good tight binding. 12mo. 8" x 5". Original dark brown cloth covered boards, but preserving the original printed label to the front board. Inner hinges carefully strengthened. Original yellow endpapers, lightly soiled. Frontispiece: "Fac-simile of the first page of an ancient poem on Masonry.." Followed by printed title. Text ends with a four page Glossary of ancient English words. Bound with a 24 pages of adverts for: "Valuable and Interesting Books Published Or Sold By John Russell Smith.." . Clean text throughout, just the odd page chip or corner crease. A very good copy of this scarce publication. ** "James Orchard Halliwell (1820-1889), published over 600 books during his life, ranging from 16-page monographs, many of which first appeared as magazine articles, to a 14-volume commentary on Shakespeare. Born on June 21, 1820, Halliwell was the youngest of 4 children of a successful leathercraftsman and merchant. One of his older brothers became a lawyer, a profession James was to have frequent dealings with over the years. The young Halliwell was noted as a mathematical prodigy. He also had a special interest in collecting medieval manuscripts, at that time still plentiful and cheap at ordinary booksellers. He combined these two traits in his writing, and at 16 was producing a column of brief biographies of scientists (mainly mathematicians) for his school paper. These included such greats as Isaac Newton, Roger Bacon, René Descartes, and Archimedes; and also Charles Butler, a notable mathematician, but also Halliwell's mentor before he went on to the University. And also Euclid of Alexandria, a biography that probably influenced his brief appearance in Masonic lore.." - see Masonic Poets *** " [The Halliwell Poem] ..It was first published in 1840 by Mr James Orchard Halliwell, a non-Mason, under the title “A Poem on the Constitutions of Masonry”. Mr Halliwell used the only known existing manuscript copy of the original that was kept in the King’s Library of the British Museum; before that it belonged to a well-known collector of the seventeenth century, Charles Theyer. Most experts believe that this manuscript originates from between 1425 and 1450, and Mr Halliwell says that it was copied in 1390. A few other people even believe that it is a transcript of the Book of Constitutions adopted by the General Assembly held in York in 926, but this seems very unlikely. The manuscript is in rhythmic verses, has 794 lines, and the language is very archaic even in relation to other manuscripts of this period.." - see An Outsider’s View of Freemasonry by Giles C. H. Nullens .

The titles are: Wee Willie Winkie; Baa, Baa, Black Sheep; His Majesty the King; The Drums of the Fore and Aft . ** The Indian Railway Library was an enterprise conducted in Allahabad from 1888. It was a publishing venture of A. H. Wheeler & Co, who "had the monopoly on bookstall sales on Indian railway stations". It was a series of pamphlets intended to catch the interest of railway passengers, and offer cheap 'throwaway' reading material. The series began as a result of an initiative by Rudyard Kipling as he sought to assemble funds to return to England from India in 1888: He approached the senior partner of A. H. Wheeler & Co, Emile Moreau, with the proposal to publish his stories in cheap booklet form. The booklets were to have grey-green cards covers, with illustrations by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. Six booklets were eventually produced, which sold at the price of one rupee. They were all by Rudyard Kipling, and consisted mainly of reprints of stories that had already appeared in various periodicals for which he was already writing in India. They were all published in 1888." - See wikipedia .

MORRIS, ROBERT 1818-1888.
The Masonic Odes And Poems. By Robert Morris, LL. D.
Chicago : Printed by Knight & Leonard, 105, 107, and 109 Madison Street, 1876 . 0. Fourth edition. A very good original cloth binding. 8vo. 8.0" x 6.25" x 0.5". pp.145 . Previous owner's signature to front free-endpaper: "W. M. La Fiorce, Gold Hill, Nev, 1875". Clean text throughout. VG. ** " Rob Morris was a prominent American poet and Freemason. He also created the first ritual for what was to become the Order of the Eastern Star. Many references state that Rob Morris was born on August 31, 1818, near Boston, Massachusetts. However, there is some evidence that he was born Robert Williams Peckham, in New York, and that he adopted the name of his foster parents after the death of his birth parents, later shortening his name to Rob to avoid confusion with another poet named Robert Morris. After he became a Mason on March 5, 1846, he became convinced that there needed to be a way for female relatives of Masons to share in some measure in the benefits of Freemasonry. While teaching at the Eureka Masonic College ("The Little Red Brick School Building") in Richland, Mississippi in 1849-1850, he wrote Eastern Star's first ritual, titled The Rosary of the Eastern Star. He organized a "Supreme Constellation" in 1845 to charter Star chapters. In 1866, because of his planned travel abroad, he handed over the organizational authority of Eastern Star to Robert Macoy. Over the years, he wrote over 400 poems, many of which were devoted to Eastern Star and Masonry. While traveling in the Holy Land, he wrote the words to the hymn "O Galilee". In 1854, he wrote "The Level and the Square", which may be his best-known poem. Because of his many works on Masonic subjects, on December 17, 1884, he was crowned the "Poet Laureate of Freemasonry", an honor which had not been granted since the death of Robert Burns in 1796. His health began to fail in 1887, and in June 1888, he became paralyzed. He died on July 31, 1888, and is buried at La Grange, Kentucky. The Rob Morris Home is kept as a shrine to Rob Morris by the Kentucky Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star." - See Wikipedia .

A very good example of an early printing of this popular title. ** William Preston 7 August 1742 - April 1, 1818. William Preston was a Scottish author, born in Edinburgh. The exact date of Preston's initiation into Freemasonry is not known, but is thought to have been between 1762 and 1763, in London. He discovered a vast body of traditional and historical lore in the old documents of the Craft, and begun modernizing the format of group meetings in such a way as to make ritual accessible, bringing a rudimentary knowledge of the arts and sciences to members of the Fraternity. Preston embarked upon detailed communication with Masons worldwide, so developing extensive knowledge of the Craft, and collecting the material which was to become his best known book, Illustrations of Masonry published in 1772. In 15 June, 1774, he visited the Lodge of Antiquity No. 1, (one of the four Lodges that formed the Premier Grand Lodge of England in 1717), and was subsequently elected a member and Worshipful Master at the same meeting. He became an active member of the Grand Lodge, and was later appointed Deputy Grand Secretary under James Heseline. After a brief period of expulsion from the fraternity for his support of a factional disagreement between the Grand Lodge of Moderns and the society over public use of ritual paraphernalia he was reinstated in 1787, all his honours and dignities restored, whereupon he resumed his Masonic activities.
