BARING, Maurice (1874-1945), Orpheus in Mayfair and Other Stories and Sketches [Presentation Copy to Constance Lytton]
BARING, Maurice (1874-1945)
Orpheus in Mayfair and Other Stories and Sketches [Presentation Copy to Constance Lytton]
London, Mills & Boon, Limited, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. First Impression (published August 1909 on verso of title page) of this "extremely difficult to find" collection of 25 weird, supernatural, and fantastic stories. Crown 8vo (189 x 121mm): [2],x,306,[2]pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed. Inscribed by Baring on fly-leaf, "C. L. from M. B. 1910." "C. L." is identified in a pencil note on the front paste-down as Constance Lytton (Lady Constance Georgina Bulwer-Lytton [1869-1923], the influential British suffragette and campaigner for prison reform, votes for women, and birth control. An excellent copy with dust-soiled top edge, but square and tightly bound, gilt undiminished, internally fresh. Clute & Grant, p. 85. Sullivan, p. 22. Locke I, p. 27. Most of the stories previously were published in London's Morning Post, including the "outstanding" story "Venus," featuring astral projection to Earth's sister planet, where enormous mushrooms are fed upon by giant caterpillars; "The Shadow of a Midnight," about a premonitory vision of murder, and the title tale, a classical myth translated to turn-of-the-century Mayfair. (Sullivan) Baring descended from a long line of financiers (his farther was first Baron Revelstoke, director of the Bank of England and senior partner of Baring Bros.). After Eton and Cambridge, Maurice joined the diplomatic service then worked as a journalist and reported the Russo-Japanese War from Manchuria. Later he was a correspondent in Russia and is credited with introducing Chekov's work to the West. He was widely connected socially, including to some of the Cambridge Apostles, to The Coterie, and to the literary group around G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc. Many of his poems, stories, and novels, according to the ODNB, "have come to be regarded as minor masterpieces in character study and social depiction," still appreciated "for the purity and simplicity of their style, and for the sensitivity and erudition which they display." BARNES, Julian
Metroland [Otis Skinner Blodget's Copy]
London, Jonathan Cape, 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. First Impression ("First published 1980") of Barnes's first novel. Crown 8vo (197 x 125mm): 176pp. Publisher's steel-grey cloth, spine stamped in silver, grey end papers; black typographic dust jacket (priced-clipped) printed in metallic silver and white. In 1980, after a prolonged apprenticeship (on staff at the Oxford English Dictionary, reviewing books for the Times Literary Supplement, and as literary editor of the New Statesman), Barnes published this short novel, a charming Bildungsroman centered on a young man growing up in London's northern suburbs (in 1956, Barnes's family moved from Leicester to Northwood, a suburb served by London Underground's Metropolitan line and thus the "Metroland" of his title), obsessed with France (where Barnes spent a year as an English teacher in Rennes), and his coming to terms with life. Winner of the Somerset Maugham award, given to an outstanding first novel. Filmed in 1997 with Christian Bale and Emily Watson. N. B. BECKETT, Samuel (1906-1989)
Proust
London, Chatto & Windus, 1931. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. A superb First Impression (with misprint "hölder" for "holder" on p. 70) of Beckett 's scarce first commercially published book (after Whoroscope, brought out the previous year by Nancy Cunard's Hours Press), one of only 3,000 copies printed. Crown 8vo (185 x 122mm): [6],72pp. Publisher's cream boards, spine lettered and covers extensively decorated in brown stylized dolphin and flowing seaweed pattern, original buff illustrated dust jacket (price-clipped) repeating binding design in blue. Beckett, age just 24, wrote this critical study of A la recherché du temps perdu in a first floor room overlooking the rue d'Ulm when he was lecteur at the École Normale supérieure in Paris, in the summer of 1930. It was commissioned by Chatto & Windus as the seventh title (of only fourteen) in the beautifully designed Dolphin Books series of brief literary works. BEDFORD, Francis (1815/1816-1894), [Photobook] Photographic Views of Warwickshire
BEDFORD, Francis (1815/1816-1894)
[Photobook] Photographic Views of Warwickshire
Chester, Catherall & Pritchard, Eastgate Row, 1865. Morocco. A fine album of views by one of the preeminent nineteenth century photographers. Oblong royal 8vo (180 × 249mm): 16 interleaved albumen photographs from collodion negatives, each mounted on card with gilt fillet border and title printed in brown. Original green cloth, upper cover blocked and lettered in gilt, cream moiré end papers, title page printed in red and black. Including views of Warwick Castle, Guy's Cliff, Kenilworth Castle, Stoneleigh Abbey, and Stratford-upon-Avon (including Shakespeare's house). Scattered light foxing to some plate mounts, but plates completely unaffected. A tightly bound, exemplary example. Between 1865 and 1875, Catherall & Pritchard brought out thirteen oblong albums of Bedford's prints, including Photographic Views of Warwickshire, which came in both morocco and cloth, permitting the buyer to specify the number of prints to be bound, the usual numbers being 16, 20, 24 or 30. The Getty copy appears to be the deluxe issue, with 30 images bound in morocco. Francis Bedford was photographer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in the East. Some idea of his photographic progress can be estimated from the reference numbers on each plate; the present numbers, ranging from 591 to 668, suggest that his photographic tour to Warwickshire followed on from his travels through North Wales. The specially built carriage he used he traveled on is used as a prop in two of the views in this album. N. B. BELLOW, Saul (1915-2005), Dangling Man [Signed]
BELLOW, Saul (1915-2005)
Dangling Man [Signed]
London, John Lehmann, 1946. First UK Edition. Hardcover. First Impression ("First published in England 1946") of this slim, quiet masterpiece (Bellow's first book) from the Nobel prizewinning author of Herzog, Augie March, and Henderson the Rain King. Slim crown 8vo (184 x 119mm): 191,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven sunflower cloth, spine stamped in brown, illustrated dust jacket (price-clipped) by Robert Medley. Signed by Bellow on front fly-leaf. Fine, tight (probably unread), and bright; about Fine jacket with touch of usual darkening to spine and back panels but front panel still vivid. Cronin & Hall 2. Written in diary format, the story centers on Joseph, "a would-be writer and intellectual caught waiting for the Draft, who romantically believes that intellectual and spiritual enlightenment is to be attained by isolating himself within the confines of a room in a cheap Chicago boarding house while he studies the great writers of the Enlightenment. [In it is] much of Bellow's early life as a young newlywed intellectual, immersed in literature of all kinds, poor and ambitious, isolated in his in-laws' Ravenswood apartment writing his first novel on a card table in the back room." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. N. B. Complete in three tall octavo volumes, in the fabulous dust jackets illustrated by Irene von Treskow: viii,376; [8],280; x,388pp. Don Emmanuel: Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in while, hunter green end papers, jacket priced £13.95. About Fine (bottom outer corners of first few leaves creased; page edges tanned, as always). Presented the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book (Eurasia Region), in 1991.Señor Vivo: Publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in gilt, robin's egg blue end papers, jacket priced £14.99. Fine. Cardinal Guzman: Publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in silver, maroon end papers, jacket priced £14.99. Fine. Louis de Bernières's Latin American trilogy "owes much to the magic realist tradition usually associated with such writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende. [In the Latin American trilogy,] de Bernières adopts a narrative style combining realistic detail with exuberant flights of fantasy involving supernatural events." (Literary Encyclopedia) Set in an imagined Latin American country, Don Emmanuel's political themes parody the worst excesses of the Pinochet government of Chile, the collapse of democratic social order in Uruguay, in the 1970s, the Colombian Armed Conflict between the military and communist guerrillas, and other dirty wars of the 1960s, 70s and '80s in Southern and Central America. In the sequel to the novel, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, the notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (thinly disguised under a pseudonym) is a central character. Cardinal Guzman lives extravagantly in the capital, and immorally, due to the discoveries of his having had a young son and his loathing of the poor shanty-dwellers who live below his palace. Despite the downfall of El Jerarca in Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, the drug trade continues and the economy of the country spirals ever downward. N. B. [Eric Arthur Blair, writing as:] ORWELL, George (1903-1950), Animal Farm
[Eric Arthur Blair, writing as:] ORWELL, George (1903-1950)
Animal Farm
New York, Harcourt Brace, 1946. First Printing. Hardcover. Uncommonly well-preserved First American Edition (so stated) of the world's most famous modern animal fable and political allegory. Slim crown 8vo (186 x 121mm): [4],118pp. Publisher's black calico textured cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream end papers; original first issue black dust jacket printed in red and white (designed by Art Brenner) and priced $1.75 and without "Printed in the USA" statement to rear flap. Green ink Christmas gift stamp to blank following front fly-leaf, else an excellent example, with crisp gilt lettering and unfaded jacket spine panel. Fenwick A.10d. Grolier (Orwell) 19.b (noting Christopher Morley's assessment of the book as "one of the great political satires" and Edmond Wilson likening Orwell to Voltaire and Swift). First published the previous year, in London, by Secker & Warburg. The author's most successful book at the time of publication, selling some 25,000 copies within a year; it has been continuously in print since 1945 and has been translated into all major languages. "Ian Willison quotes Peter Viereck, 'Bloody-minded Professors', Confluence (September 1952): '[Angus] Cameron was among those who after the war prevented Little, Brown from publishing George Orwell's anti-Communist satire, Animal Farm. Some 18 to 20 publishers, almost all the leading ones, turned down the best anti-Soviet satire of our time." (Fenwick) "Orwell developed his analysis of Stalinist communism during the Spanish Civil War after his experience in Barcelona, in 1937, of the violent suppression by Communist forces of POUM, the anarchist militia of which he was a member. Animal Farm, which Orwell worked on during the War, is the brilliant realisation of his understanding of the Russian Revolution seen in terms of the rejection of servitude by the animals at Manor Farm. Appearing as the post-war settlement was taking place, and as the Cold War began to be invented, the book seemed timely. The power of the fable comes from its simplicity and its utter conviction, as well as from its fabular analysis of the history of the Soviet Union as Stalin became its leader." BLOSSFELDT, Karl (1865-1932), [Photobook] Wunder in Der Natur. Bild-Dokumente Schöner Pflanzenformen
BLOSSFELDT, Karl (1865-1932)
[Photobook] Wunder in Der Natur. Bild-Dokumente Schöner Pflanzenformen
Leipzig, Verlag: H. Schmidt & C. Günther Pantheon-Verlag für Kunstwissenschaft, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. First (and only) Printing of the final book in Blossfeldt's celebrated trilogy (with Urformen der Kunst and Wundergarten der Natur), showcasing "unfamiliar shapes from the vegetal worlds . as startling, elegant architectural forms." (Roth 101) Introduced by Professor Otto Dannenberg. Royal 8vo (322 x 245mm): [10]pp, with 120 black & white full-page plates in sheet fed gravure. Publisher's navy blue linen, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gold, top edge stained navy blue; in the scarce illustrated dust jacket. Slight slant to spine, trivial expert repair to head of jacket's spine panel (involving neither lettering nor design), but a superior example, about Fine, tightly bound and clean throughout with rich renditions of the plates. Roth (101 Books), p. 48. Heidtmann 14507A. Heiting/Jaeger I, pp. 188-201. Published posthumously. Karl Nierendorf, the Berlin gallerist who first showed Blossfeldt's images of "austerely elegant" (Roth 101) plant parts (twig ends, seed pods, tendrils, leaf buds) along side African sculpture, wrote the introduction to Urformen der Kunst as a manifesto on the interrelationships between art and nature, pointing to Gothic, Renaissance, and Rococo architectural ornamentation "echoed in the tendrils, stalks, pods and blossoms of Blossfeldt's photographs," calling Blossfeldt's straightforwardly scientific, greatly magnified close-ups of plant forms "isolated objects of unexpected aesthetic delight." (Many copies were disbound, and the photogravures sold as individual prints.) "These he meticulously arranged against stark backgrounds and photographed in magnification, so that unfamiliar shapes from the vegetal worlds are revealed as startling, elegant architectural forms." BLY, Robert (1926-2021), The Light Around the Body [Inscribed Association Copy]
BLY, Robert (1926-2021)
The Light Around the Body [Inscribed Association Copy]
New York, Harper & Row, 1967. First Printing. Hardcover. First Edition (so stated) of Bly's second collection, playfully inscribed by him on the front free end paper in three colors of pen in the year of publication: "Oct. 24, '67 / For Henry / who published so many / of these poems / and for Juliet / With warm wishes / Robert." The dedication is to Henry Rago (1915-1969), a poet whose own poems were widely published and editor of Poetry Magazine from 1955-1969, where a full third of the poems in this volume originally appeared. Tall, thin 8vo: viii,62,[2]pp. Publisher's mid-blue paper-covered boards lettered in white, fore-edge untrimmed, cream-colored end papers; matching typographic dust jacket, priced $3.95. An excellent (apparently unread) and important association copy. Roberson A7. Bly's second book of poems "could not be thematically more different from the 'deep image' lyrics of his first book, Silence in the Snowy Fields. A blatantly outspoken attack on the American involvement in the Vietnam War, Light [Around the Body] names names and graphically describes and details man's inhumanity to man in war. The book shocked many readers. Surprisingly enough . it won the National Book Award. Characteristically, Bly publicly donated his prize money to the draft resistance movement. The five sections of the book ('The Two Worlds', 'The Various Arts of Poverty and Cruelty', 'The Vietnam War', 'In Praise of Grief', and 'A Body Not Yet Born') clearly illustrate Bly's themes, focus, and structure. The "outward" war poems, placed in the central section, are surrounded by the "inward" poems that point the way back to a more healthy condition, individually and collectively, personally and politically. If there is to be any "light around the body" it will need to come from within, from man's inner life, and it will need to work its way out into the world, vanquishing war and healing the psyche, and thus making peace possible." Boston, Marshall Jones Company, 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. A superb First Printing of Bligh Bond's prophesies of the Great War, "gathered from automatic writings obtained between 1909 and 1912, and also in 1918, through the hand of John Alleyne." Crown 8vo (195 x 130mm): 134pp. Publisher's grey speckled paper-covered boards elaborately paneled, decorated, and lettered in green repeating design of dust jacket (which is unpriced, with flap corners clipped, as issued). Tightly bound and virtually pristine (likely unread). Somewhat scarce, with Library Hub Discover listing only nine holdings and few copies in commerce. In addition to his practice as an architect and archaeologist, Bligh Bond was a psychical researcher. He joined the Freemasons in 1889, the Theosophical Society in 1895, the Society for Psychical Research in 1902, the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia in 1909, and the Ghost Club in 1925, and from 1921 to 1926 he was editor of Psychic Science (then named Quarterly transactions of the British College of Psychic Science). Late Victorian and Edwardian literati seemed especially prone to belief in the phenomenon of Automatic Writing, the supposed psychic ability that allows a person to produce written words that flow from a subconscious, spiritual, or supernatural source. When Dickens died in 1870 leaving The Mystery of Edwin Drood unfinished, his spirit supposedly was so enraged that it channeled the novel's conclusion to the itinerant printer T. P. James. And shortly after his marriage in 1917 to Georgie Hyde-Lees, W. B. Yeats was heavily influenced by her "automatic script." Arthur Conan Doyle, in his book The New Revelation (1918), wrote that automatic writing occurs either by the writer's subconscious or by external spirits operating through the writer. Doyle and his wife led an automatic writing séance with Harry Houdini during which Lady Doyle wrote fifteen pages of purported messages from Houdini's mother, which Houdini discounted as bunk. N. B. The former was first published in 1941, in Spanish, as a stand-alone collection of eight short stories, and republished with the latter under the title Ficciones in 1944. With The Aleph (1949), it is one of the twin pillars upholding Borges's reputation as one of the greatest literary artists of the twentieth century. The stories of Ficciones [some of Borges's best known pieces, including "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote," "The Garden of Forking Paths," "The Library of Babel," "Death and the Compass," and "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius"] had a seismic impact on the development of world literature; its aftershocks can still be felt today."
