William Harrison Ainsworth, Preston Fight, or the Insurrection of 1715
William Harrison Ainsworth
Preston Fight, or the Insurrection of 1715
London, Tinsley Brothers, 1875. First edition. Cloth. A scarce first edition of this historical novel, which tells the story of the Jacobite uprising and the siege of Preston. This is a late novel by William Ainsworth, who published his first work in 1834. He had intended to be a lawyer, but found that it held no attraction for him. He devoted himself to journalism and writing novels instead. He was a significant member of literary circles, and notably became close friends with Dickens in the 1830s. Overall he published 39 books. This can be considered as one of his Lancashire novels, which all together cover some 400 years of history. Historical fact and fiction are freely intermingled, which has led some historians to view him a little critically. The seige of Preston occured when a group of some 4,000 Jacobite rebels moved South into Lancashire in 1715. The government forces sent to meet them managed to surround them in the village of Preston. Despite government attacks being heavily repulsed, the rebels were forced to surrender, and many were transported to the Americas. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: complete. In the original cloth with decoration to the boards and gilt detailing to the spines. Externally sound with a little wear and bumping to the extremities as well as the heads and tails of the spines. Internally, with contemporary ink inscriptions to the title pages. Otherwise, generally clean and bright and firmly bound. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
