As such it is an important milestone in the history of the study of Jewish texts. Contains biblical texts in Hebrew characters. It was the most popular book of the Hebraeists in the Netherlands, read by the orthodox Calvinists and the more liberal `Remonstranten'. In de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw ontvluchtten veel Joden de armoede en het antisemitisme van Oost-Europa. Eigenlijk wilden ze naar Amerika, maar vanaf 1926 kwamen Asjkenazische Joden, vooral afkomstig uit Polen en Roemenië, ook aan op Curaçao. Daar werden de arme Oost-Europese Joden aanvankelijk door hun welgestelde Sefardische geloofsgenoten afgewezen. Desondanks hadden ze zich binnen vijftien jaar stevig op het eiland verankerd. Vooral de naoorlogse jaren vormden de hoogtijdagen van de Asjkenazische gemeenschap op Curaçao. Ze bezaten inmiddels de meerderheid van de winkels in Punda en hadden onderling een zeer hechte band.
