0700601023 MERRIMAN, JAMES DOUGLAS, The Flower of Kings: A Study of the Arthurian Legend in England between 1485 and 1835
MERRIMAN, JAMES DOUGLAS
The Flower of Kings: A Study of the Arthurian Legend in England between 1485 and 1835
Lawrence, KS: The University Press of Kansas, 1973. 0700601023. First Printing. Hard Cover. ISBN: 0700601023. Publisher's full maroon cloth, gilt lettering and borders on spine, gold endpapers. Includes Note, Bibliography and Index. This is the copy belonging to Judson Boyce Allen (1932-1985), the author of several works on medieval literature, including "Distinction of Stories: The Medieval Unity of Chaucer's Fair Chain of Narratives for Canterbury;" and "The Friar as Critic: Literary Attitudes in the Later Middle Ages." This book provides for the first time in over seventy-five years a single, comprehensive, up-to-date account of the fortunes of the Arthurian story in England from the time of Malory to the beginning of the Victorian period. After a brief survey of the earliest forms of the legend, the author examines the slow decline of the myth in the English Renaissance until its near extinction by the middle of the eighteenth century, despite the attraction which it held for Spenser, Drayton, Jonson, and Dryden. Succeeding chapters show that even through the legend's vitality was reduced by both Dryden and Fielding, the Romantic movement brought Arthur back to life, Minor figures such as William Hilton and Richard Hole, together with Scott and Wodsworth, though they did not produce great poems on the subject, are shown nevertheless to have responded seriously to the legend. The book concludes with an England ready in its interests and sympathies for the great flowering of the Arthurian story among the Victorians. Throughout this survey, which covers both the major figures and a number of hitherto unexamined minor authors, James D. Merriman is concerned with several questions of considerable interest both scholarly and critical. Moderate foxing on edges only; former owner's name, Judson Allen, in elegant calligraphy on ffep, brief bibliographic note by Allen on rear panel of dust jacket, now in mylar. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD.. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. (xi),(ii),307 pp. Signed by Associated. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket .

VAN OSTADE, INGRID TIEKEN-BOON
The Two Versions of Malory's Morte Darthur: Multiple Negation and the Editing of the Text
Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 1995. 0859914372. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. ISBN: 0859914372. "Malory's Morte Darthur survives in two versions: the Winchester manuscript, which has been dated 1469-70, and the edition Caxton published in 1485. These versions were thought to be collaterally related through a common source to an original lost manuscript, until in 1977 new evidence suggested a linear descent. Dr Tieken-Boon van Ostade's study supports this argument, first through a detailed refutation of Vinaver's arguments for collateral descent, then through an analysis of the incidence of multiple negation in both versions of the Morte Darthur and the conclusions to be drawn from it. A reconstruction of the events leading to Caxton's publication of the text at a politically hazardous time completes the volume.". The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square, and clean. AS NEW.. Arthurian Studies Series. Vol. 35. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. (x), 169, (2) pp. As New in As New dust jacket .

ROBERTS, DOROTHY JAMES, The Enchanted Cup
ROBERTS, DOROTHY JAMES
The Enchanted Cup
NY: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1953. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). 1. Hard Cover. Quarter bound in publisher's black cloth over red boards, gilt (red) lettering and intricate decoration on spine, embossed enchanted cup medallion on cover. This is the story of Tristan and Isolde, from Malory's Morte d'Arthur, told in modern romantic prose in novel form. When Tristan sailed into Ireland, he was near death from the wound which had won him knighthood. His sword, too, bore a wound, for a piece of it still remained in the head of a great champion who lay dead at Tristan's hands. In Ireland his destiny awaited him. There he first saw Isolde, who would be the great love of his life, and a symbol of love for all time. For her he would challenge the fierce Saracen knight, for her no risk would ever prove too great. A fresh retelling of the greatest and most tragic of the love stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The volume is in excellent condition, tight and square, sharp corners, one small closed tear at head of spine, else fine. The dust jacket, now in mylar, is split at the front hinge and has a large section missing at the heel of the spine. NEAR FINE/POOR..
