The Song of Songs
London, John C. Nimmo, 1886. Cloth. A scarce limited edition of the Tanakh's 'Song of Song', illustrated with beautiful plates after Alexandre Bida by Edmond Hedouin and Emile Boilvin. A scarce limited edition work. A limited edition, limited to two-hundred and fifty copies, of which this is numbered fifty-eight. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and twenty-four plates. Collated, complete. Back strip defective as usual with this work. 'The Song of Songs' is the last section in the Tanakh, and a book of the Old Testament. The work is unique within the Hebrew Bible, as it does not show interest in Law, Covenant, or the God of Israel. Nor does it try to teach or explore wisdom. The songs celebrate sexual love, with two lovers being in harmony. In Jewish tradition the work is read as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel, and in Christianity it is an allegory of God and his bride, the Church. Illustrated after designs by Alexandre Bida, a French painter of the Romantic period. Bida is known for his paintings of the Bible, his paintings being highly regarded, bringing a truth and genius to his depiction of Christ that showed him as strong, dignified, and refined. Illustrated by Edmond Hedouin, a French painter and engraver, known for his detailed reproductions of paintings by famous painters. Also illustrated by Emile Boilvin, a French nineteenth century painter. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'To my Song of Songs, upon her birthday, 5656, 'Many waters cannot quench love neither can the floods drown it', p44&apos. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, lacking the backstrip. Some rubbing to the boards, heavier to the extremities. Light cracks to the joints. Minor marks to the boards, with a couple of heavier marks to the rear board. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd mark, tidemark to the bottom of the last few pages. Plate facing page 14 is lifting to the tail but remains firm. Good Only . Ill.: Edmond Hedouin; Emile Boilvin; Alexandre Bida. Good Only .
