Jews in the Netherlands. A Short History
Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Press, 2023. 224 pp. Illustr. NEW. Hardcover. Most people know little more than fragments of Dutch Jewish history: the Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam; Jewish socialism; the devastating years of the Second World War. So where is the storyline? What happened to the Jews in the Netherlands from the moment they first settled there? This book answers that question. It presents the central points of 700 years of Jewish history in the Netherlands briefly and succinctly. One hundred elements of the story have been chosen that, taken as a whole, create a balanced and representative picture. Each relates to a central event, place, person or object that helps to illuminate one important aspect of the history of the Jews in the Netherlands, and each is linked to striking, iconic images. They are grouped by century around unifying themes that make them part of an ongoing story. ISBN: 9789463726696

WALLET, BART
Nieuwe Nederlanders. De integratie van de joden in Nederland 1814-1851
Amsterdam, Bert Bakker, 2007. 323 pp. Illustr. Goed exemplaar. Schoon, geen naam stempel of andere gebruiksporen. Paperback. Dutch language. History jews in the Netherlands, 19th century. ISBN: 9789035131309

WATERMAN, ASJER and ANNA E. DE WILDE
Reviving the soul of the community. Developments in the post-war history of Ets Haim - Livraria Montezinos. MBI Studies No. XV. ISBN 9789082967401
Amsterdam, Menasseh ben Israel Instituut, 2019. 64 pp. New. Paperback. Until this publication, the recent history of Ets Haim-Livraria Montezinos was paid scant attention. Yet the post-war years may have been the most tumultuous in the life of the famous library of the Portuguese-Jewish congregation of Amsterdam. During this tough chapter, the community’s few surviving members who were responsible for the books faced formidable challenges. With the meagre resources available, how were they to restore the library - the ‘soul’ of their congregation - after most of its books had miraculously survived the Nazi lootings? Were these books still safe in Europe? And were there enough Jews left to warrant them remaining there? Or were they perhaps better off in the brand new Jewish state, where many more people would take an interest in them? On the basis of original archival research, Asjer Waterman and Anna de Wilde have chronicled how these questions led to bitter conflicts, but how in the end the library emerged again as the pride and joy of Amsterdam’s Portuguese Jews. It thus remains the oldest still functioning library in the world, but has also become a modern research library with well-preserved books and manuscripts that draws scholars from the four corners of the earth to the heart of Jewish Amsterdam.

WERTHEIMER, Jack
Unwelcome strangers: East-European Jews in imperial Germany.
New York, OUP, 1987. 287 pp. Slight traces of use. Text clean without underlinings or markings. Paperback. When East European Jews migrated westward in ever larger numbers between 1870 and 1914, both German government officials and the leaders of German Jewry were confronted by a series of new challenges. What policies did government leaders devise to cope with the seemingly unending tide of Jews flooding across Germany's borders? What was the actual, as opposed to the perceived, character of these Jewish migrants? How did native Jews respond to the arrival of coreligionists from the East? Drawing on archival research conducted in East and West Germany, Israel, and the United States, Unwelcome Strangers probes into these questions, touching on some of the most troubling issues in modern German and Jewish history--the behavior of Germans toward strangers in their midst, the status and self-perception of emancipated Jews in pre-Nazi Germany, and the responses of privileged Jews to needy, but alien, coreligionists. Zerubavel, Yael
Recovered Roots / Collective Memory and the Making of Israeli National Tradition.
Chicago/London, University of Chicago Press, 1997. xvi, 340 pp., spine slightly discoloured, Very good copy. Paperback. Judasim. Zerubavel focuses on the nationalist reinterpretation of the defence of Masada against the Romans in 73 C.E. and the Bar Kokhba revolt of 133-135; and on the transformation of the 1920 defence of a new Jewish settlement in Tel Hai into a national myth. Zerubavel demonstrates how, in each case, Israeli memory transforms events that ended in death and defeat into heroic myths and symbols of national revival. ISBN: 9780226981581
