Cooke's work depicts imaginary creatures who have been created through combining elements from marine and terrestrial fossils as well as living specimens. Collated, complete with all 24 plates. Every plate has an accompanying description providing the witty name of the creatures and their contributing features. A very bright copy of Edward Cooke's satirical take on Darwin and evolution. This work is frequently compared to the 'nonsense botany' of Edward Lear. Rebacked, as is often common with this work as it was in a gutta-percha binding. Edward William Cooke was one of the leading maritime artists of his time. He held a great personal interest in natural history and was a member of the Zoological society of London as well as the Linnean Society. An important work.  In the publisher's original binding. In a beautiful full calf binding with ornate gilt stamping to the boards and spines. The first edition second state, with 404 pages to volume II. Bracebridge Hall was first written in 1821 whilst Irving was living in England. Title page attributes authorship to Geoffrey Crayon, a pseudonym for American novelist Washington Irving. The novel is an inter-twining of individual sketches and tales based on the occupants of an English manor with the same name as the title. Bracebridge Hall is based on Aston Hall near Birmingham, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family Irving often visited. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the board edges and spines. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the extremities. This work is a series of satirical cartoons, containing controversial topics of the time. Illustrated with eleven plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Written and illustrated by Cynicus, the pseudonym of Martin Anderson. Cynicus was a Scottish artist and political cartoonist. Eden Phillpotts was an English author and poet, being a very prolific writer. Some of his works were 'The End of a Life', 'The Golden Feitch', 'Demeter's Daughter', 'The Deed Without a Name', 'The Human Boy and the War', and much more. With two newspaper clippings loosely inserted, one detailing the loneliness of Cynicus' older brother, and the later reunion of them. Both clippings are from 'The Sunday Times', one from December 29 1929, the other from 5th January 1930. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart.
