He was a prolific writer with over twenty historical romances, and numerous historical works to his credit. With Ferdinand Sere he wrote a famous five volume history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In 1885 he was appointed the librarian of the Arsenal. this book is as famous for its illustrations as for its text. An untrimmed copy in the original sprinkled publisher"s wrappers of the 1-St. Edition of Lambrecht"s history of the Dutch colony in America up to its cession to England in 1674. This booklet covers the discovery and exploration of the regions around [present-day] New York (pointing out that Henry Hudson, though an Englishman, was sent to America by the ""VOC" ( Dutch East India Company) the Folding map [54,5 x 42 cm.] "Kaart van Nieuw-Nederland" gives the American coast from Delaware to Maine, and extends inland as far as the St. Lawrence River and a small part of Lake Ontario. Drawn by J.P. Bourje and engraved by J.C. Bendorp.A very detailed map, giving all the Dutch forts. A mediocre copy of this scarce little volume; Original publishers wrappers with printed spine label, some stains, top and foot of spine gone. Lower right hand corner of title page and PP. 1 to 7 with paper losses, some [blank! ] parts missing, no loss of text!! See: Sabin: 38745. Apart for the mentioned defect a complete copy of a scarce volume, needing the skillfull hand of your restorer.. Fair.
