From the introduction, "As far as possible every portrait known to exist, whether in the larger mansions and farmhouses of the country or in the towns is here described, the name of the artist given when it is known, and a short genealogical account of the subject appended. The list follows in alphabetical order, each town and village in the western division of the county of Suffolk, that being the only portion dealt with in the present volume. Every picture herin described has been seen by the compiler, and many of them have passed under a very minute examination, by which means several hitherto unknown portraits have been identified, the names of the artists discovered, and scores of portraits, being approximately dated, have been enabled to have names tentatively assigned to them.
