Mawe, Thomas, John Abercrombie and Other Gardeners
Every Man His Own Gardener
London, England, J.F. and C. Rivington, T. Longman, B. Law, J. Johnson, G.G.J. and J. Robinson, T. Cadell, W. Goldsmith, R. Baldwin, J. Murry, E. Newbery, and W. Lowndes, 1791. Thirteenth Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A still remarkably sturdy, quite attractive, tightly bound hardcover copy of the stated Thirteenth Edition of a popular and influential treatise on gardening, the first edition having been published in 1767. The first publication appeared under the name of "Thomas Mawe &c.", retained here but joined by John Abercrombie, who was considered the real name of the author, depicted at frontispiece portraits of other editions. Abercrombie was the Master Gardener for the Earl of Leeds. Clean, lightly toned interior, minimal rubbing to extremities. Rag paper is supple and bright yet. Full calf leather, with seven gilt rules to spine, and gilt title, rubbed, over burgundy label. Hinges and joints are both tight and firm. Engraved frontispiece is precious, depicting an Englishman digging a hole, watering can at-foot, with ladies and gentlemen in the background; quite fetching. John Abercrombie (1726–1806) was a Scottish horticulturist who is famous for innovations in gardening tools and techniques and taught Botany at the University of Cambridge for a time. He apprenticed at the Royal Gardens at Kew, and at Leicester House (Wikipedia). Frontis matter, 2-616 [24] pp., with a remarkably complete Index.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Good
