D'Holbach, Baron and Paul Henri Dietrich
Le Bon Sens Puise Dans la Nature, Suivi Du Testament Du Cure Meslier
Paris, Chez Bouqueton, Libraire, vieille rue du Temple, no. 12, [1792]. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. 12mo. in format, comprised of two parts, bound in marbled paper over boards, brown leather-backed, hardcover. Tome Premier [6], 264 pp.; Tome II: 296 pp. At the bottom of p. 296 is the following: "Voila le precis exact du testament in folio de Jean Meslier; qu'on juge de quel poids est le temoignagne d'un pretre mourant, qui demande pardon a Dieu. Ce 25 mars 1742." Printed on blue-tinted paper. Inside the front flap at extreme top in extreme miniscule appears what appears to be previous owner's name (Arthur Den---unintelligible) and then a paragraph's worth of miniscule notation and that mentions D'Holbach. Scholars of intellectual debate in mid-late 17th century French society have dubbed the "Arnauld (1612-1694)-Malebranche (1638-1715) Debate" one of the great intellectual events of the century, and both men were Catholic priests. Denis Moreau writes that "From 1683 to 1694, a long and furious polemic took place between Malebranche and Antoine Arnauld. When the debate began, Malebranche was still a â€oeyoung†philosopher (The Search After Truth was published in 1674), identified by the public as one of the leading lights of the new generation of Cartesians. Antoine Arnauld (1612- 1694), on the other hand, was an â€oeold†thinker, known mainly for his theological (rather than philosophical) writings" (from The Malebranche-Arnauld Debate).Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Beauchesne, Alcide-Hyacinthe du Bois de
La Vie Et la Legende de Madame Sainte Notburg
Paris11868, Henri Plon, 1868. First Edition. . Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. A fine and compelling French-language exploration of the establishment of the Christian faith in the Neckar Valley of France by the life and works of a revered saint. The volume is divided into three books and thirty-nine chapters and augmented by 84 engravings after the drawings of M.S. Langlois. Short quarto format, demi-chagrin blue paper over boards, black leather at tips and spine, with five raised bands, gilt lettering and ruling at spine. Scuffing to spine head and spine, tips and edges, cracking of half-inch at front joint bottom, still remarkably sturdy, very slight crack beginning at front top joint, barely perceptible. 318 pp. Gothic text in French set in a red frame, damp-staining of upper page tips from pp. 155-243 but not often affecting text; slightly waffled text. Neither odor nor mildew detected. Frontispiece, full-page, in black-and-white, of Nantilde et Notburg, tissue-protected. Plentiful thumbnails in text, other full-page engravings, quite lovely. 318 pp. including notes. Else and withal a lovely exemplar of a due homage to Madame de Notburga (c. 1265 â€â€oe September 13, 1313), also known as Notburga of Rattenberg or Notburga of Eben, an Austrian saint from Tyrol, according to a Wikipedia article about her, she being "the patron saint of servants and peasants."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . de la Bedolliere, Emile
Histoire de la Guerre de Prusse
Paris, Georges Barba, Libraire-Editeur, . First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. First Edition Thus; the work was originally issued in parts, but it was eventually published as one in Paris by Georges Barba, the Libraire-Editeur, in probably about 1874, though the date is not so stated. Bound in tall quarto format, 320 pp., in a pebbly leatherette over boards, surely a rebind at some point and with also a lovely rebinding of the spine in full, gorgeous creamy leather, gilt-tooled lettering to spine, and with four raised bands thereto and four precious fleurs-de-lis. The typographer was August Parent, and there are also 41 black-and-white woodcuts by a number of artists, including Adrien Marie, Janel Lange, and a number of others. Moderate foxing to the pages, toned, and sunned along the edges, as to be expected, else and withal a lovely copy indeed that looks wonderful on the shelf. The text-block is waffled a bit but shows no signs of damp-staining and is not malodorous. Double-columned text reads easily (if one reads French), and it looks extremely handsome on the shelf. The tome is bound with: Nouveau Dictionnaire Des Communes De France, also published by Georges Barba but authored by V.A. Malte-Brun, definitely in 1874, comprising an 82-page alphabetical listing of townships, etc. of France shortly after the Paris Commune. The O.C.L.C. shows 1 listing with a different publisher and an approximate date of of 1800-1899, which is impossible. The second work of this volume has a date of 1874 which I surmise is the date of the principal work.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Good
