A very scarce first edition of this work, in the original publisher's green cloth binding with the unclipped dust wrapper and decorative, illustrated endpapers. This work was written by John Hislop, author and amateur jockey. Hislop was extremely involved in the horse-racing world, having owned and bred champion racehorse, Brigadier Gerard. He also competed in the Grand National. This horse-racing knowledge fed into Hislop's writing, with works including 'From Start to Finish' and 'Racing Reflections' being popular within the racing community. This particular work depicts different aspects of steeplechasing, including 'Riding Over Fences', 'Riding Bad Jumpers' and 'Tactics&apos. Hislop explains what is needed to excel at steeplechasing, the distance horse race containing many obstacles to jump over. With eight beautiful colour plates illustrated by English sculptor and equine painter, John Skeaping. Collated, complete. Many other illustrations and vignettes throughout. In the original publisher's green cloth binding with the unclipped dust wrapper and decorative endpapers. Externally, very smart, with fading to the extremities. This charming volume presents a series of illustrations of the sport of hunting, with numerous depictions of horses and animals throughout. Illustrated by G. D. Armour. G. D. Armour was a British painter who in throughout his artistic career and personal life had a deep in interest in horses, so much so that in 1910 he chose to study studied military equestrianism at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. There are 55 plate in total. Collated complete. With an introduction by Horace G. Hutchinson. Hutchinson was an amateur golfing champion who is noted from writing numerous sporting works. In a quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Externally lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with patches of loss to paper covered boards to the extremities. Handling marks to the front and rear boards, including a mark to the rear board and small ink spots towards the head of the front board. Age toning to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns.
