Inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Helen Brocklehurst March 1925&apos. This work contains measurements of game animals worldwide and was the pioneering book of its kind. The first edition of this work was titles 'Horn Measurements and Weights of the Great Game of the World&apos. In addition to measurements there are anecdotes from hunters and naturalists regarding species, geographical variations, subspecies, weights and measurements. Ward's 'Records' was a valuable resource for hunters as field guides were not usually published. Therefore, this work was the handbook for knowing what mammals could be found worldwide across the Empire. As the series progressed, the 'Big Game Narratives' were also a celebration and who's who of big game hunting. Many notable people entered their trophies to be mentioned such as King George V, Sir Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt. Every specimen in the work has the owner's name listed next to it. A fantastic copy of this important game enchiridion. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. London, Rowland Ward, 1928. Cloth. A signed, early issue of Rowland Ward's important periodical 'Records of Big Game', and one of the last to contain African and Asiatic game. This volume was issued at the peak of hunting before the Second World War and the collapse of colonialism. The ninth issue, signed by the editor J B Burlace to the front endpaper. Dedicated to one of the Brocklehurst family and dated 1928. This edition was edited by J B Burlace and J G Dollman. This issue was one of the last to contain African and Adiatic specimens with other game. In 1935 the tenth volume was issued with only African and Adiatic specimens. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Henry Courtney Brocklehurst. Brocklehurst was an avid hunter himself, and wrote the work 'Game Animals of the Sudan, Their Habits and Distribution&apos. Courtney Brocklehurst was the brother of explorer Philip Lee Brocklehurst. He was killed in action in Burma during the Second World War. Ward was a British taxidermist and founder of Rowland Ward Limited. Handsomely bound in a quarter morocco binding with cloth boards. Bound in a Birdsall signed binding. Written under the pseudonym The Druid which is Henry Hall Dixon this book explores horses and racing. The enlarged and revised edition includes twenty edited chapters. Additional material has been added on hunting. In the Preface to The Hunting edition from 1856, the Druid admits his lack of experience. He openly says that his hunting experience comes from observation rather than participation. In this preface The druid expresses gratitude and thanks to people who gave him accurate information which enabled him to write. This copy includes a beautifully engraved frontispiece and title page vignette. It includes one plate of J. J. Farquharson. Bound in a quarter morocco with cloth boards. Externally generally smart. A limited edition, limited to 600 copies, of which this is numbered 147, with the editor's facsimile signature to the limitation page. The first edition.In the original publisher's reverse calf.Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece, and fifty-one monochrome plates.The plates depict the beauty of the original illuminated manuscript.Collated, complete.'The Master of Game' is an immensely important medieval manuscript of Edward, the 2nd Duke of York's, hunting treatise. It's mostly a translation of Gaston Phoebus' work 'Livre de Chasse&apos.This manuscript was originally compiled between 1406 and 1413, and is the oldest English language book on hunting. Though this work was made during the fifteenth century it wasn't published until this modernised English 1904 edition.The 2nd Duke of York was a grandson of King Edward III, and he held important positions during the reigns of Richard II, Henry IV, and Henry V - during the reign of Henry IV he held the position of master of game. In 1415 he was killed at the Battle of Agincourt. With a foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, this work was published whilst he was the President. Teddy Roosevelt was a very noted hunter, and published three of his own works about hunting, as well as contributing to many other volumes on the sport.Edited by William A. and F. Baillie-Groham. William and his wife Florence modernised the work. In the original publisher's reverse calf binding. Externally, worn. Head of the spine is lifting with some loss, a little further loss of leather to the extremities of the front board. Rear joint is cracked, with a little further loss and a repaired crack to the tail of the spine. Boards are discoloured with some marks. Front hinge is strained, rear hinge has failed.
