London, Chatto and Windus, 1880. Leather. A first edition of these beautifully drawn and humorous sketches; depicting various hunting scenes. Collated complete with twenty tinted lithographic plates with lithographed text, interleaved with their original tissue guards. Miss Bowers was a humorist, with very clear and happy notions as to what fun should be, and how it should be transferred to a picture. Her long career began in 1866, and thenceforward, working with undiminished energy, she executed hundreds of initials and vignettes as well as "socials," devoting herself in chief part to hunting and flirting subjects. She states "My 'jokes' all came from incidents I saw out hunting, and from my own varied adventures with horse and hound". With specialist equestrian bookseller; J. A. Allen and Co, bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Rebacked in a contemporary quarter crushed morocco binding, with original paper covered pictorial boards. Externally, rubbing to the spine and extremities. Light marks to the boards and with the backstrip slightly lifting to the head of the spine. Internally, binding has failed in places with some leaves detached but, fortunately, present. Bright throughout although with the odd spot, and very light foxing to the last few endpapers.
