Chocolate Lady (SIGNED COPY)
Jafint Co. London, 1993. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. 9780952236504 Signed by Author. Inscribed on the title page: "To Hugh, with much appreciation, Joseph Amamoo London, Aug. 24, 1994". Loosely inserted photocopy of review of the book from . 'New African' magazine July/August 1994. "The Chocolate Lady" is a story of high drama, intrigue and politics, in Which treachery and treason are enormously rewarded. The heroine, a brave white woman risks her life in an effort to effect a counter military coup and the return of democratic, civilian rule in an African state. Colonel Kofi Johnson of Bassa organises a successful coup, only to be toppled by the 'Chocolate Lady'. Was the chocolate lady motivated by selfless devotion to her African husband. or was she an operative in the C.I.A? Was she an agent of the Israeli Secret Service, Mossad, as many suspected, or was she driven by altruism? Could the events narrated in the novel happen elsewhere apart from Bassa? Was the avidly womanising colonel really semi impotent? 'The Chocolate Lady', is a gripping, funny story that lays bare gross incidents of murder, juju, voodoo. double-dealing and anti-Semitism in the African state of Bassa. This novel may be banned in some countries for fear that the fiction of Kofi Johnson may become a reality. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 281 pages. When they realise that Volney the Vole has even more pressing worries than theirs, they do not hesitate to drop their own concerns and set off with him to save the Vale of the Vole from the depredations of the demons who have taken up residence there. When they arrive at Castle Roogna, they join Princess Ivy of Xanth, who turns out to be a more than adequate substitute for the Good Magician they had hoped to find. And there will be more allies - an amorous brassie who fancies Esk, a skeleton who can reassemble himself in the most useful shapes and a host of curse fiends, centaurs and ogres. But can they prevail against the malice and magic of the demons?"; top right corner clipped from pre-title page but otherwise perfect copy of this large-format paperback; 287 pages. Ball, Brian N.
Timepiece
Science Fiction Book Club / Readers Union, London, 1970. First Thus, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Jacket design by Terry James; the first of three novels in the 'Galactic Federation' or 'Timepiece' series; "In one of the most unusual time stories to be written in recent years, Brian Ball takes the reader on a journey through the universe and produces some of the most fascinating concepts to deal with the relativity of time, and space, looking for the focal point of time itself. He blends science and fiction in an explosively imaginative form that whirls the reader into a Vortex of excitement. But perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of this novel is that the theories expounded by the author have been checked by a noted scientist and have been declared feasible." Bush, Christopher
The Case of the Seven Bells: A Ludovic Travers Mystery
MacMillan, New York, 1950. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. It was a bewildering problem that confronted Ludovic Travers when the spivs who threatened the barmaid, Maudie Brown, let fall word of a proposed robbery at the bungalow of a famous actress. And when that robbery took place and the actress was murdered and Superintendent George Wharton took an official hand, the problem became more baffling still. Why, for instance, did Maudie disappear? And why was there a crying baby at the bungalow? And what connection could there have been with a certain famous clown? And why the queer movements of a once famous conductor? The questions crowded in on Travers and Wharton, but readers of Christopher Bush’s “Case books” will not need reassuring that skillful and ingenious detection won the day and solved the mystery of the Seven Bells.
