Arnold, M.L., Reticulate Evolution and Humans: Origins and Ecology
Arnold, M.L.
Reticulate Evolution and Humans: Origins and Ecology
Oxford University Press 2009 xii, 233, text figs. . HB. Fine.. The first book to describe the effect of genetic exchange on the origin and evolution of our own species as well as those species with which we have and continue to interact closely, both evolutionarily and culturally. After demonstrating how genetic exchange has affected H. sapiens, the book goes on to describe how the same processes have structured the evolution of organisms on which the human species depends for shelter, sustenance and companionship. It also considers the "dark-side of gene transfer as it pertains to the evolution and adaptation of human disease vectors and diseases. The development of the central thesis of this book - that reticulate evolution via introgressive hybridization and lateral gene transfer has been a pervasive factor in the evolution and cultural development of H. sapiens, its ancestors, sister taxa and associated organisms - reveals the extent of these processes across the widest of taxonomic, temporal and spatial bounds. We cannot escape the conclusion that we are constantly fed, entertained, sheltered, attacked and killed by organisms that possess mosaic genomes reflective of widespread genetic exchange during evolutionary diversification.. The Royal Society. Sold by Harrison & Sons 1910 [4], 160, 154, 53, 60, 79, ix, 2 col + 1 plain plate, text figs (2 tinted), 1 folding table. . HB. 5 parts bound in one volume, 8vo, orig. two-tone blue cloth, with orig. printed front wrapper to each report bound in. Vg.. Five reports originally issued separately, 1902, 1905, 1906, 1908, 1909, and here in the combined volume issued on completion, together with the general title page (dated 1910), Contents and Index to the complete work. Rare.William Bateson (1861-1926) was an English biologist and evolutionary theorist who was best known for rediscovering and defending the genetic paradigm of Gregor Mendel. Bateson first used the term 'genetics' to refer to the study of heredity. These reports cover the seminal research conducted by Bateson. "The rediscovery of Mendel's work transformed Bateson's career. He reinterpreted experimental data already available in Mendelian terms. As spokesman for the new discipline, Bateson knew no peer, yet his work was financed with great difficulty. The reports to the evolution committee of the Royal Society were the main vehicle of Mendelian publication in Britain until 1910" (DSB)..

Evolution from Molecules to Men
Cambridge University Press 1983 xiv, 594, text figs. . HB. Vg in d/w (spine slightly faded). From the library of the entomologist Peter Miller (1931-1996), with his signature to endpaper.. Takes a broad view of biological evolution as a whole and attempts to identify the outstanding scientific problems as they appear to the most able exponents of the subject 100 years after the death of Charles Darwin. Topics discussed range from the history of the development of evolutionary thought, through current problems in molecular evolution and the evolution of whole organisms, to evolution of behaviour, sociobiology and man's place in evolution. Each chapter has been written by an acknowledged expert with the more general reader in mind, so the book will have a broad appeal. Includes contributions by E. Mayr, S.J. Gould, R. Dawkins, E.O. Wilson, among many others.. [9780521247535]

Alfred Russel Wallace: Explorer Evolutionist Public Intellectual - A Thinker for Our Own Times?
Siri Scientific Press 2013 224, 6 col plates, 35 b/w illus. 240x165mm. PB. Vg. Owner's name inside front cover.. Only now is Alfred Russel Wallace beginning to get his long overdue recognition. In his own time he was acknowledged as joint author, with Darwin, of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Since then, the bright light shone on Darwin’s achievements has cast Wallace into shadow. this book shows how Wallace’s independent discovery of natural selection was no mere flash of inspiration, but the outcome of many years of study and reflection on his extraordinary early life as a field naturalist in South America and the rain forests of the ‘Malay Archipelago’. Surviving fever and insect bites on the amazon, he was shipwrecked with the loss of most of his notes and collections on his return journey. Astonishingly, within two years he was preparing for his second major expedition, this time to South East Asia, and for a stay of eight challenging years. It was here that he made his great scientific breakthrough, and provoked Darwin into prompt publication of his Origin.Wallace used his experience in the tropics as the basis for his next major achievement – a classic work that established biogeography as a scientific specialism of great importance for today’s urgent challenge to protect the world’s biodiversity. As if this were not enough, Wallace became a bold and controversial public figure, campaigning on such issues as compulsory vaccination, parliamentary reform, and the rights of workers and colonised peoples. He was for many years president of the Land Nationalisation Society, and an ardent critic of the injustices of 19th century capitalism. Later in his life he engaged with radical thinkers such as William Morris, Edward Bellamy, Henry George, Robert Blatchford and Ebeneza Howard in envisaging just and sustainable alternative social and economic futures. This book gives a succinct account of Wallace’s life, before going on to analyse in more detail the development of his ideas on natural selection, his disputes with Darwin on sexual selection and human evolution, and the development of his political ideas. In each topic, the author brings the story up to date, and assesses Wallace’s ideas in the light of today’s thinking.. [9780957453029]
