This work looks at the mysterious disappearance of the French naval officer Jean de le Perouse, who vanished on an expedition in Oceania. The author, Labillardiere, was part of the voyage in search of the expedition in 1791. The voyage was unsuccessful, and failed to find any trace of the missing expedition. Labillardiere was a French biologist who was noted for his descriptions of the flora in Australia, and for producing the first Flora on the region. He went on his first voyage as a naturalist in 1783, being sent to Britain to study the exotic plants in cultivation. This fired a passion in him to explore and study foreign lands, travelling to Cyprus, Syria, Nazareth, and the Mediterranean. Undated, dated from Copac from copies held at the British Museum and Oxford University. Lacking the additional uncommon atlas folio. Collated, complete. Rebacked with the original calf boards laid on, though the front board of Volume II has a new board. Externally, smart. Some rubbing to the original boards, and some small marks.
