Agnes Arber (1879-1960) was the first female botanist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first woman to receive the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London for her contributions to botanical science. Her research was mainly focused on morphological studies in botany. This work is Arber's history of 'Herbals' or botanical works in Europe, through the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, with information on the evolution of plant classification and the art of botanical illustration, as well as detailed insights on specific works. This fascinating volume reveals the way plants have been used and viewed in Europe through two centuries. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Illustrated with colour and engraved plates, as well as numerous in-text illustrations. In three volumes complete. William Aubrey (1858-1916), was a London author and journalist, privately educated in the USA in New York and at Rutgers. He was later editor of The Morning Weekly and Capital and Labour, and a reviewer at the Daily News. In full calf binding. Externally smart.There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spines which are rubbed and chipped. The spine to Vol. I is also torn and becoming detached at the front outer hinge. The corners are bumped and chipped, and the front and rear outer hinges are cracked. Internally, generally firmly bound. The front inner hinges to Vols. II and III are strained but holding. Pages are bright apart from some occasional spotting affecting the plates in particular. There are also some isolated handling marks. A beautifully bound collection of periodicals from the nineteenth century, mostly comprising of the colour-illustrated French magazine 'Le Figaro&apos. Le Figaro was founded in 1826 as a weekly satirical, taking its name and motto from 'Le Marriage de Figaro&apos. By 1866 the newspaper became a daily newspaper and is still in print today. This set comprises of three volumes. The first volume opens with three separately paginated collections of sheet music from Le Figaro, followed by three untitled excerpts from the magazine, two of which have dates handwritten to the first leaf, '1889' and '1891&apos. Following this are the October, November and December issues of Figaro from 1891 which have continuous pagination and the original coloured wraps. These issues have the front and rear wraps. To the second volume there are fifteen sequential issues of 'Le Figaro' from October 1891 to December 1892 inclusive. These issues have the front and rear wraps. To the third volume there is an entire year of 'Le Figaro' from January 1893 to December 1893. These issues of 'Le Figaro' all contain the pictorial front wraps. This is followed by January 1894 from 'Le Figaro', with front and rear wraps, and then individual monthly excerpts from two British periodicals. These are 'The Lady's Pictorial Christmas 1895' and 'Cycling World Illustrated' from September 1896. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown of all volumes, Phillipson and Golder. In uniform full morocco bindings with mounted metal plates to the boards, which are etched with the periodical title. Externally, all volumes are very smart. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and the odd marks to boards. A few small worm holes to the front board of the 1891 volume. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Closed tear to the coloured front wrap to the February 1892 issue. Where the original coloured wraps are present, they have been closely cropped to the head and tail. A two volume set of L'Ordine Sovrano di Malta e Gli Ordini Equestri Della Chiesa Nella Storia e Nel Diritto or The Sovergine Order of Malta and the Equestrian Orders of the Church in history and law, in the original Italian and in a slipcase. Both volumes are written by Giacomo C. Bascape with the first volume being published in 1940 and the second in 1959. The second volume includes documents from 1943 to 1959. The first volume has thirteen colour plates and the second has four colour plates. There are further black and white illustrations throughout both volumes. Collated. The Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, or commonly known at the Order of Malta, are a chivalric religious order born around the second half of the 11th century and are dedicated to St. John the Baptist.  Both volumes are in the original paper wraps. Externally, volume one is much more age toned and worn than the second volume. The spine of volume one is a little faded. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound with bright and clean pages. 'Le Roi chez la Reine, ou Histoire secreÃÂOe€te du mariage de Louis XIII et d'Anne d'Autriche' by Armand Baschet is a fancintaing insight into the marriage of these French Royals. This particular work is based on the medical records and manuscripts kept by the doctor of Louis XIII. Louis XIII was of the House of Bourbon as was reigning monarch of France from 1610-1643, and also the King of Navarre from 1610 to 1620, when Navarre was merged with with French crown. He married Anne of Austria, daughter of Philip III of Spain in 1615 as solidification of the military and political alliance of the two nations. Armand Baschet was a writer and journalist, born Blois France in 1829. Initially his work was oriented towards Italy in particularly Venice, but later, after the discovery of the doctor notes that inspired this particular text, shifted his focus to both French and Italian history. In quarter morocco binding. Externally, sound. Rubbing to spine, to the head and tail, and to the raised bands. Small crack to the rear joint, to the tail. Smalls cracks also to front joint to the head and tail. Rubbing to the front and rear boards, and also to the extremities. Slight spotting to the front and rear endpapers. Slight tidemark to the front endpaper, and first pages, to the tail. Previous owners inscription to the front endpaper reads, 'With Kind Regards from D H Jackson, 8/1/21.' Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot throughout, heavier to the first and last pages. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
