(S.S. PARIS)
Group of Five (5) Menus
The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique's best known and largest ocean liner was launched by this French firm in 1916 and this "Aristocrat of the Ocean" crossed from Le Havre, France to New York with cruises elsewhere until 1939. Collection of five menus, each small 4to (8½" X 11", opening to 17" X 11"), with 1936 issue dates of 1 July, 16 July (two, with differing front covers) and 3 May (two, with differing front covers). Very good. Bits of minor wear only. Front covers are all pictorial, with inner left bearing the day's menu in French and inner right the same in English -- down the center appears the "Menu Suggestion." Those from July 1st and July 16th both note they are "Raymond-Whitcomb Cruise." July 1st cover depicts a woodblock engraving of a 3-masted ship labeled "Navire Du XVIe Siècle" (Ship of the 16th Century) and those from July 16th and May 3rd are color reproductions from the "Les Costumes Normands de jadis" French women's fashion series: "Jeune fille de St. Valéry en Caux," "Jeune fille de Cherbourg," "Fermière d'Harcourt, près Caën" and "Jeune fille des environs de Dieppe." A superb quintette from the most famous luxury ocean liner afloat in the 1930s. .

(MILK PROCESSING PLANT -- FLOOR PLAN)
N.p.: Education Research, Inc. 1950. Printed color poster, 38" X 25". Near fine. Original folds (none weakened), else superb and pristine, with colors as bright as the day it was published and entirely lacking in age toning or edge tears. This curious and handsome poster bears no title, but is entirely filled with a floor plan (pictorial style, not a blueprint) of a milk processing plant. A greyish sidewalk with ornamental shrubbery runs outside its borders with a variety of pedestrians strolling, observing, playing, some entering the plant's cafeteria at lower left and sitting at the stools along the winding counter. Twelve other rooms are pictured and identifdied, with workers her and there operating machinery, etc. Arrows with brief text take the viewer on a guided tour through this large factory. These other rooms consist of (in order of size): "Milk Processing Room," "Ice Cream Processing Room," "Hardening Room," "Bottle and Case Washing Room," "Milk Receiving Room," "Milk Storage Room," "Laboratory," "Salesmen's Room," "Receiving Room for Cream and Milk Solids," "Supply Room," "Compressor Room" and "Boiler Room. Beautifully printed in full color. In addition to this floor plan, also present are sixteen (16) heavy stock 10" X 7" sheets (printed in color on one side only), each with a color cutout meant to be snipped apart and assembled into a three-dimensional piece of processing machinery to be affixed to predetermined spots on the floor plan. (Some sheets include two separate pieces of the identical machinery.) There are cutouts for two "Farm Pick-Up Truck," two "Milk Delivery Truck," two "Ice Cream Delivery Truck," "Cooler for Milk Receiving Room," "Pasteurizer," "Homogenizers," "Clarifier for Milk Processing Room," "Milk Storage Tank," "Coolers," "Weigh Tanks," "Holding Tank," "Bottle Filler and Capper for Milk Processing Room" and "Can Washer." Whether these materials were produced for distribution to public schools as a public relations move or for use in trade schools or other training institutions we have been unable to determine. In any case, a delightful period piece in choice collector's condition. .

(WOMAN'S MISSIONARY SOCIETY), Printed Invitation with Cloth Sack
(WOMAN'S MISSIONARY SOCIETY)
Printed Invitation with Cloth Sack
The Woman's Missionary Society, more formally the Woman's Baptist Home Missionary Society, was formed in Chicago in 1877 in order to train and send women to missions both at home and abroad; later it joined with other similar societies to form the American Baptist Home Mission Societies. Printed card, heavy stock 3¼" X 4½," n.p. 20 March 1902. Near fine. Two small diecut holes near top (as issued) permit a cream satin ribbon to affix to the front a small, bright yellow cotton sack (empty, as issued). Within an ornamental border is a three-stanza poem telling the recipient how to use it: "We invite you to come and celebrate / What we give in your honor, a birthday fete; / This birthday party is give to you, / 'Tis something novel, something new; / We send to each this little sack -- / Please either send it bring it back." It continues: "Please put in the sack that we send to you / Some pennies, no matter if old or new; / One for each year of your life that is past, / One for the first as well as the last, / The secret the sack will never unfold, / Should you wish the years to remain untold." And finally: "Kind friends will give us good things to eat / And the ladies will furnish some kind of a treat, / Then come if you can, if you are well and hearty, / If not send your sack by some other party." Below which in boldface is identified the sender -- Woman's Missionary Society -- along with the date and place -- Cottonwood Church, Thursday Evening." Also present is the small original mailing envelope, addressed to Miss Phebe Green of Morrison, Illinois but not stamped or cancelled. We believe this quaint relic, which is in exceptional bright condition, was a celebration and fundraising effort for the Society's twenty-fifth birthday. Unusual -- a rare survivor. .

(GENERAL ORDERS -- CIVIL WAR -- WISCONSIN). THOMAS, Lorenzo, and TOWNSEND, E.D.
Collection of Three General Orders
Washington, DC, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, 1862. Handbills. 12mo. Very good to near fine. One is 4-punched at left edge (not affecting text). Unusual gathering of three Wisconsin-related "General Orders" issued in 1862, 1863 and 1864, all issued from the Adjutant General's Office at the War Department in Washington, DC, as follows: General Orders, No. 217 (30 December 1862), 1p, Notes three miscellaneous actions for three individual servicemen, the last of which involves 2d Lieutenant Samuel B. Morse of the 7th Wisconsin Volunteers, who resigned before the order dismissing him. General Orders, No. 11 (10 January 1863), 1p, dismissing Colonel R.C. Murphy of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteers from the Army "for allowing his command to be surprised at Holly Springs, Mississippi, without having taken proper steps to protect his post, or repulse the enemy, and his troops having been found in bed at the time of attack." General Orders, No. 211 (15 June 1864), 1p, text of a Congressional resolution "tendering the thanks of Congress to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey, of the 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers.. for distinguished services in the recent campaign on the Red River, by which the gunboat flotilla under Rear Admiral David D. Porter was rescued from imminent peril." General Orders were usually made in modest quantities for distribution to the various army commands, where the company clerks would collect them (hence the occasional file holes). A great many were destroyed during the course of the war, and original examples of most survive in surprisingly few copies. .

(RAILROAD -- TIMETABLE)
Chicago & North-Western Railway -- Madison Division. (between Milwaukee and Madison. )
N.p. [Chicago]: Chicago & North-Western Railway, 1882. Broadside. 14½" X 9". Very good. Bit of sporadic soiling, but overall remarkably clean and attractive -- given it's printed on a thin tissue paper, a rare survivor. Timetable "No. 4," which "Takes Effect Sunday, May 7th, 1882, at 12 o'clock Noon" and is meant "For the Government and Information of Employes only," containing two columns (headed "Trains Going West" and "Trains Going East") showing all stops for both freight and passenger trains between Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. Signed in large type at the bottom by J.D. Layng as General Superintendent, C.A. Swineford as Superintendent and Wm. F. Fitch as Assistant Superintendent. Rare to find in ANY condition, given its inherent fragility, much less this attractive condition. Newly and archivally framed under UV-filtering glass with a single archival cream matte and 3/4" thick dark wood and antiqued gold frame (overall dimensions 18" X 12½") -- giving it a superb period feel. .

(GENERAL ORDERS -- CIVIL WAR -- MINNESOTA). TOWNSEND, E.D.
General Orders, No. 184
Washington, DC, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, 1863. 16mo. Self-cover. 8pp. Near fine. Binding traces at gutter (not affecting text). This lengthy and fascinating General Order chronicles the Fort Snelling court martial trial of Captain James Starkey of the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers, charged with "Making false muster," "Willingly signing muster rolls containing false musters," "Making false return to his superior officer of the state of his Company" and "Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." Each charge is elaborated in great detail. Starkey was found guilty of most of the charges and sentenced "To be cashiered, and to be forever disqualified from holding any office of trust or profit under the Government of the United States" -- this latter sentence commuted by President Lincoln, who always believed in giving someone a second chance. Signed in type at the conclusion by Townsend as Assistant Adjutant General. General Orders were usually made in modest quantities for distribution to the various army commands, where the company clerks would collect them (hence the occasional file holes). A great many were destroyed during the course of the war, and original examples of most survive in surprisingly few copies. .

(PATRIOTIC COVERS -- CIVIL WAR), Collection of "U.S. Naval Expedition" Patriotic Envelopes
(PATRIOTIC COVERS -- CIVIL WAR)
Collection of "U.S. Naval Expedition" Patriotic Envelopes
12 covers, each 5½" X 3", New York, NY, n.y. Near fine. Unused and with faintest of age toning only and original gum present. Exceptional complete set, printed entirely in brown ink by Charles Magnus at 12 Frankfort Street in New York. Undated, although Steven R. Boyd in his "Patriotic Envelopes of the Civil War: The Iconography of Union and Confederate Covers" dates it to August 1861. While most of the dozen feature naval ships prominently in the middle ground or foreground, often with groups of soldiers (not sailors!) in various activities, only two covers actually depicts naval battles at sea and the final three covers depict infantry soldiers battling with no apparent nautical references whatsoever. A fascinating grouping seldom found complete and in uniform outstanding condition. .

(BROADSIDE BALLAD -- CIVIL WAR), Welcome Our Gallant 69th
(BROADSIDE BALLAD -- CIVIL WAR)
Welcome Our Gallant 69th
New York, H. De Marsan, n.y. Broadside. 6¼" X 10". Very good. Numerous edge chips along right side and bit on lower edge only slightly encroaching on decorative border. This crudely printed broadside ballad (undated, but circa 1861) includes a thick decorative patriotic border featuring red and blue stars and stripes, olive-branch clutching American Eagle, etc. with publisher's data ("H. De Marsan, Publisher / 54, Chatham St. / N.Y.") at bottom center of border. Sung to the tune of "Marshal Ney," a popular tune celebrating the Napoleonic figure, this Civil War tune celebrates the 69th New York Infantry Regiment, the "Fighting Irish" or "Fighting Sixty-Ninth." Two stanzas and one chorus are featured, the chorus reading: "Right and left -- left and right: / We fought the Rebels with all our might; / Brave CORCORAN did wounded fall, / And HAGGERTY died by a Traitor's ball." Irish-born Michael Corcoran (1827-63) led the 69th at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, in which he was taken prisoner, and Irish-born Captain James Haggerty, the first member of the 69th to die, was reportedly killed by a Louisiana Zouave, which also included many Irishmen. These "penny ballads" were all the rage during much of the 19th century, and were invariably printed on thin, delicate stock and sold by street vendors. A quite attractive example of this rare survivor. Inkstamped on verso is "Geo. F. Hambrecht" -- a well-known Civil War collector and noted Lincoln scholar (1871-1943) who founded the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin and served as director of the Wisconsin State Board of Vocational Education. .
