(TRADE CARD -- New York City)
The Great East River Suspension Bridge Connecting the Cities of New York & Brooklyn
N.p. [Lynn, MA]: Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, n.y. [ca. 1883]. Single heavy stock card. 4" X 2½". Very good. Mild bit of minor soiling. Steel-engraving on recto depicts a broad view of this then-state-of-the-art suspension bridge -- and of course suspended along the underside of the main horizontal bridge, at center of the card, is a long vast billboard reading "Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound." Numerous sailboats, a large paddlewheeler, tugboats, etc. fill the bay. Below the caption near the lower edge is a three-line text listing the bridge's statistics: span, cable size, width, tower height and so on. The all-text verso touts the virtues of this patent medicine, "a Positive Cure For all those painful Complaints and Weaknesses so common to our best female population. It will cure entirely the worst form of Female Complaints, all Ovarian troubles, Inflammation and Ulceration, Falling and Displacements, and the consequent Spinal Weakness, and is particularly adapted to the Change of Life." A nice example of this well-known card from the most famous patent medicine producer of the 19th century -- likely produced in the very year of her death (she was born 1819). .

Article of Agreement...
New York, Bell & Gould, n.y. Folio (13½" X 8"). 2pp (4pp lettersheet). Very good. Single light horizontal fold, else bright and nice. Handsome condition blank legal form published by this noted early 19th century publisher of legal blanks; at the death of one of the sons of company founder Alexander Gould in 1884, "The American Stationer" noted, "Legal forms bearing its imprint are known from one end of the country to another." This particular form, printed on pale blue stock typical of the 1850s, is an "Article of Co-partnership," and consists of boilerplate text with blank areas meant to be filled in by hand. Interesting example from one of the leading lights in the legal form field of the day. .

(BOOKPLATE ART). "V.G.
Original Bookplate Proof
Proof copy of the lineoleum-block custom bookplate, 4" X 6½" (framed to 5" X 7¼"), n.p. n.y. Fine. Handsome proof pull of this rectangular (rounded corners) striking example by a talented practitioner known only by the tiny "V.G." initials, an ornate image noting "Ex Libris / Arnold Larsen" in crossing banners and other typical bibliophilic features, a rose-clutching hand, etc. Larsen died around 1990, and while this proof is not dated it likely dates from the 1960s. Tastefully and simply single-matted in cream and framed in a simple ½" black frame. Arnold Larsen was not a famed bookman, but anyone who frequented the fondly-remembered rare books department at Marshall Field's in downtown Chicago knew him. A sharp example of bookplate art. .

(CIVIL WAR -- JO DAVIESS COUNTY -- HANDBILL), Programme. Third Annual Reunion, Jo Daviess County Soldiers' & Sailors' Association, Warren, ILL. , Sept. 1 and 2, 1885
(CIVIL WAR -- JO DAVIESS COUNTY -- HANDBILL)
Programme. Third Annual Reunion, Jo Daviess County Soldiers' & Sailors' Association, Warren, ILL. , Sept. 1 and 2, 1885
Warren, IL, Jo Daviess County Soldiers' & Sailors' Association, 1885. Handbill (or small broadside). 5" X 10½". Very good. Milld overall wear and light age toning, several folds. About a month and a half after General Grant's death, this regional military association from northwest Illinois whose county seat, Galena, became the Union hero's adopted hometown, held their third annual reunion. The 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Washburn Lead Mine Regiment," was formed in Galena in 1861 and saw much action before being mustered out in 1865; many Jo Daviess County men also joined the 96th Illinois Infantry Regiment, organized in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. Within a simple ruled border, this handbill lists events for the "First Day" ("Army dinner, and a general good time.. Dress Parade.. Grand Banquet.." with numerous toasts from officers and others associated with the service, and best of all "Each speaker limited to five minutes) and the "Second Day" (including a Grand Review, Business Meeting of Association, Picnic Dinner, Annual Address by Gen. J.C. Smith and others, closing with a "Rousing Camp Fire"). Rarely seen and an attractive copy. .

(POSTAL HISTORY), Collection of U.S. Postal Cancellations
(POSTAL HISTORY)
Collection of U.S. Postal Cancellations
Hardcover. Folio (14½" X 11"). Grey cloth, front board bearing large ornate "ALBUM" in gilt and extensive black and gilt decorations, with small color plate at lower right. (31pp), (55pp blank). Very good overall. Binding rather edgeworn and rubbed, but tight and sound; text leaves heavy, age toned thick stock typical of Victorian album leaves, with some showing more age toning. Fascinating Victorian album with about 23 pages' worth of tipped-in content amongst the first 31 pages, the final 55 pages being blank. For the most part this is a collection of U.S. postal cancellations clipped off envelopes -- approximately 555 total: Eight pages bear about 63 per page and three pages contain a dozen or more each. Most date from the early to mid-1880s from communities large and small across the U.S. with a bit of concentration in the Midwest (especially Illinois and Iowa). Many of these small towns likely no longer exist. One bizarre page bears a delightfully weird Joseph Cornellesque montage featuring periodical cutouts of a large Uncle Sam figure in color, the U.S. Capital building in the background, as he manipulates like a puppet master a strange array of presidents, ships and assorted miniscule tracery all clipped from U.S. postage stamps (see image). Two pages bear an assortment of eclectic printed return address envelope portions ("Engineer, Office, U.S. Army," "Union R.R. and Transportation Co." "Patrons of Husbandry State Grange of Illinois," "Chief Engineer's Office Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad," etc.) A scattering of five pages bear small numbers of mounted U.S. and foreign stamps. This unique album came from the collection of Alfred N. Abbott (1862-1929), a noted Illinois state representative (1899-1903, 1911-15), farmer, president of the Illinois State Farmers' Institute and Deputy Commissioner of the Illinois Commission to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition -- and two pages bear checks and other receipts made out to him, such as an 1890 Union Stock Yards of Chicago receipt and a 1916 check from the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway Company. (Alfred's father was Asa McFarland Abbott (1820-89), pioneering Illinois farmer of note whose home was a well-documented Underground Railroad site; his niece was Olive Oatman of the Oatman Massacre fame, whose family left their neighboring farmstead to travel westward and were murdered by Native Americans, she and her sister being held captive; in 1857 she co-authored the bestselling "Life Among the Indians," one of the best-known Indian captivity narratives.). .

Accompanied by a Civil War-era 6" X 9" heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Hitchcock in uniform. Very good. Mild age toning and bit of faint foxing. .

(LINCOLN, Abraham)
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address
Chicago, Rand McNally & Company, 1970. Folio (24" X 18", folds down to 6" X 9"). Heavy stock beige. Very good. Original mailing folds, else bright and nice, without edgewear. This promotional poster issued by Disabled American Veterans features numerous color artist renderings chronicling Lincoln's life from "Birth in Kentucky" to "The Last Full Measure," each with descriptive paragraph beneath each image. Verso features facsimile of the Gettysburg Address in Lincoln's hand in actual size at center, surrounded by text of same in eight different languages (each printed in a different color). Caption above them all reads, "The immortal words of Abraham Lincoln at the Gettysburg battlefield, November 19, 1863, on the occasion of the dedication of the National Military Cemetery. These classic remarks have, in the intervening century, become accepted throughout the world as the greatest affirmation of our democratic form of government. -- RALPH G. NEWMAN" -- and alongside this an original signature of Newman on a 3½" X 3/4" slip has been affixed. Ralph G. Newman (1912-98) was the famed founder of Chicago's notable Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. .
