Lady Susan, Sanditon, Volume the First
Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1925-33. Cloth. A nice set of three of Jane Austen's works which were unpublished during her lifetime. Three of the lesser known works of Jane Austen, all of which were unpublished during her lifetime.'Lady Susan' is an epistolary novel, an early complete work which Austen never published during her lifetime. The novel follows the eponymous Lady Susan Vernon, a beautiful and charming widow who goes to visit her brother-in-law at his country residence.'Sanditon' was an unfinished novel, left behind by Jane Austen when she died in 1817. There were only 120 pages of this manuscript, but it has been thoroughly analysed in a critical manner over the past couple of hundred years. This copy is titled 'Fragment of a Novel' to the title page, and 'Sanditon' to the spine label, which is the name the novel is now better known by. 'Volume the First' contains sixteen of Austen's early works, writing in a variety of genres - short stories, verses, moral fragments, and playlets. Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey
London, Nicholas Vane, 1949. Hardback. An early Goldfinch Titles edition of Jane Austen's posthumous novel. This Goldfinch Titles second edition of Jane Austen's posthumously published novel 'Northanger Abbey' features illustrated pastedowns, depicting scenes of Strawberry Hill and Bath's Assembly Rooms. Despite being Austen's first novel prepared for publishing, it was not presented to the public until after her death, satirising Gothic novels and, as many of Austen's works, features a young heroine seeking out not wealth or social acceptance but genuine happiness and morality. Second edition, in unclipped dustwrapper. Bookplate of John Jordan to recto of front free end paper. A wonderful parody of contemporary popular literature, Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' is well presented in this Goldfinch Titles edition. In the publisher's original binding, with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart, with some shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine, some fading to the spine and some handling marks to the boards. The dustwrapper is generally very smart, with some age-toning, some chipping to the head and tail of the spine, shelfwear to the extremities, and some off-setting to the interior. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean, with only some age-toning. Bookplate to the recto of the front free end paper. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Jane Austen, The Novels of Jane Austen
Jane Austen
The Novels of Jane Austen
London, H.G. Clarke, 1844. Leather. An extremely scarce, beautifully produced edition of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility&apos. With the vanishingly scarce original chromolithographed gilt wrappers bound in to all volumes. A very scarce, early edition of these Austen novels. Both are real rarities even more so with the beautiful original wrappersThis edition of Sense and Sensibility was the first separate edition of the novel to be published after the expiration of the copyright in 1839. Pride and Prejudice is the scarcer of the two works in this edition. (Gilson E3) and (Gilson E2).  Gilson states that no copy has been seen in the original wrappers. But it has now, and its a beautiful example. All volumes are bound in contemporary dark green half calf with gilt spines. Volume II of Pride and Prejudice has been rebacked in a similar style. 'Pride and Prejudice' is arguably Austen's best known novel. It was first published in 1813 and has become one of the most popular novels in English literature. 'Sense and Sensibility' is another of Austen's noted novels and upon its initial printing in 1813 marked a success for its author. It has been in continuous publication since. Austen's novels mark the transition to nineteenth century realism from the novels of sensibility that dominated the late eighteenth century. Her biting irony, humour and social commentary have lead her novels to be in high standing centuries later. In near uniform half calf bindings, with paper covered boards. Volume II of Pride and Prejudice has been rebacked, with the original boards preserved. Volumes I and II of Sense and Sensibility have been rebacked, with the original backstrips laid down. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the spines. Head of spine to volume I of Pride and Prejudice is lifting slightly. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Small mark to the 'P' of the front wrap to volume II of Pride and Prejudice. Pages are bright. Page 51 to volume II of Sense has been trimmed at the fore-edge, not affecting the text. Light spotting to the title pages of all volumes, otherwise just the odd spot. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

 Jane Austen, Persuasion
Jane Austen
Persuasion
Philadelphia, Carey & Lea, 1832. First edition. Cloth. A scarce, first American edition of Jane Austen's final novel. In the publisher's original binding, and with the scarce adverts. Complete with the often missing publisher's catalogue to the rear of the first volume for Carey and Lea. These volumes are in the publisher's original binding, and held in a very bright custom slipcase. A scarce edition of Jane Austen's final novel. Persuasion was first published in England six months after Austen's death. It concerns Anne Elliot, the 27 year old protagonist whose family moves to lower their expenses. This novel is often regarded as Austen's most maturely written novel. Upon initial publication this work received moderate success, but its fame came later into the nineteenth century and continued onward to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Gilson (B3) notes that 'relatively few copies of the 1832-1833 Philadelphia editions are known to survive&apos. Austen's novels mark the transition to nineteenth century realism from the novels of sensibility that dominated the late eighteenth century. Her biting irony, humour and social commentary have lead her novels to be in high standing centuries later.  In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Housed in an excellent full calf slipcase, which is in a fine condition. Externally, both volumes are sound, with a loss to the backstrips, heavier to volume I which is in need of careful handling. Patches of light rubbing and a few ink marks to the boards. Rear blanks to both volumes have small portions removed by hand, possibly to omit a prior owner's inscriptions. Ink marks to the rear endpaper of volume II, and a prior owner's inscription regarding this work. Prior owner's inscription to the front endpapers, title pages and first text leaf of both volumes 'C H & J Myers&apos. Front free endpaper to volume I is detached but present. Front hinge to volume I is tender, and the board may detach unless carefully handled. Otherwise, both volumes are generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
