The first edition of this work. 'The Spendthrift' is a novel following the lives of four people, all entangled in complicated romantic feelings, with the morality of money hanging over them. Depsite being a prolific author, William Harrison Ainsworth has been largely forgotten after his death. His novel 'Rookwood', featuring the highway man Dick Turpin, gave him a his first success as a writer, and he went on to right thirty-nine novels. Some of his other novels include 'The Tower of London', 'The Lancashire Witches', 'The Constable de Bourbon', 'Boscobel', and 'Preston Fight&apos. Illustrated by Hablot K. Browne, who is also known widely as 'Phiz', the illustrator of many of Charles Dickens' novels. With a frontispiece and a further seven plates throughout. Collated, complete. In the original published cloth binding, with blind decoration to the boards, and gilt decoration to the spine. Externally, smart. Light rubbing and markings to the boards, causing light discolouration. A little light rubbing to the joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd handling mark and scattered spotting throughout, mostly to the first and last few pages and to the plates. William Harrison Ainsworth was an English historical novelist renowned for his incredibly popular historical romances, such as this text, 'The Star Chamber&apos. Ainsworth initially studied law but left it for literature, publishing his first novel anonymously in 1826. His first success came with the novel 'Rookwood' published in 1834, featuring the highwayman Dick Turpin, which led many reviewers to hail him as the successor to Sir Walter Scott. In a long career that extended to 1881, he published some forty novels. Featuring prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown and inscription in crayon to the rear free endpaper. With an ink stamp of 'Webley's Coffee House' throughout. In a cloth binding. Externally, sound with some wear to extremities, rubbing and slight marks to boards. Front hinge strained. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. The first edition in one volume. With an engraved frontispiece, etched title page, 18 full plate etchings, 3 wood engraved plates and numerous vignette illustrations throughout the text. It has been said that the wonderful illustrations dominate this text. Tony Jahannot, a French illustrator, began the illustrations. After four illustrations for the Ainsworth's Magazine he was replaced as Cruikshank as the illustrator for the remainder of the work. Windsor Castle was originally published in serial form in 1842. It is a historical, yet gothic, romance which depicts Henry VIII's pursuit of Anne Boleyn. Alongside the main storyline there is a sub plot with the story of the actions of Herne the Hunter, a legendary ghost that haunts Windsor Woods. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the joints and spine. Small loss to head of spine. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. It is a historical romance with gothic elements that depicts Henry VIII's pursuit of Anne Boleyn. Intertwined with the story are the actions of Herne the Hunter, a legendary ghost that haunts Windsor woods. Ainsworth wrote Windsor Castle in 1842 while he was publishing The Miser's Daughter. During this time, he was constantly working in order to publish the novel by April, and Ainsworth only stopped when he mother, Ann Ainsworth, died on 15 March 1842. It was published in a serialized form in the Ainsworth's Magazine starting July 1842 and ending in June 1843. Including half-title to volume III only. Complete in three volumes.
