A later impression of this work by William and Robert Chambers, initially serialised in 1935 as a cheap reference work for the middle and working classes. A successful publication, which sold seventy thousand issues in its first year. Published before Chambers' most popular work, an extensive and important scholarly undertaking known as one of the most important English encyclopaedias of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Chambers's reference works gained immense reputation for accuracy and scholarliness; the present volumes focus on subjects of more interest to the common man and pertinent to their self education, with sections on zoology, geography, history, mechanics, arboriculture, and more.With illustrations throughout. No half-titles. In uniform half calf bindings over marbled boards, with decorative gilt to the spine, marbled endpapers. Externally smart with some shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the spine, boards and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are very clean with a touch of age toning, as usual.
