 Various, The London Encyclopaedia or Universal Dictionary, Volume 1-7, 10, 11, 17, 18, 20
Various
The London Encyclopaedia or Universal Dictionary, Volume 1-7, 10, 11, 17, 18, 20
London , Thomas tegg, 1829. Leather. Twelve volumes of Thomas Tegg's famous London Encyclopaedia, illustrated with both plates and diagrams, tables and graphs. This work is a window into the state of scientific knowledge in Western societies in the first half of the 19th century. The work was originally published in parts. This is the third edition, which (it seems) was the first edition comprising the whole set. It was a serious 'speculation' for the publisher, as it collated contributions from a myriad of experts and 'learned gentlemen' in order to create a formidable repository of modern knowledge. After some early success, in 1828 the publisher declared "instead of appropriating the present profits of the undertaking, he has invariably thrown them back upon the work itself; and he trusts, improvement in the variety, the originality, and the accuracy of the articles in each department is visible to every reader. The contributors possess the highest qualifications for the respective tasks assigned to them; their number has been augmented, and their remuneration increased..in all the requisites of science, literature, and good writing, the London Encyclopaedia is not inferior to any of its predecessors or contemporaries, while it combines in every branch all the improvements which are to be derived from its being the last in order of time." Included are numerous graphs, diagrams, and plates of illustration - often showing the mechanical principles of contemporary machines. In a half marbled leather binding with marbled boards. Externally sound though a little rubbed, with some marking to the boards and spines. Volume 18 has some minor damage near the head of the spine. The joints on volumes one and three are just starting but still firm. Internally with only the odd spot here and there, often confined to the first or last few pages as usual. The edges of the text blocks are a little dusty. Generally firmly bound. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
