E di ciae, che gli avenne negli ultimi cinque mesi della sua vita. Roma, per Francesco Gonzaga, 1711.
. Small 4to. Pp. 70 and one folding engraved portrait. Contemporary vellum, "relazione" in ms on spine. First edition of a biographical study comprising three works of cardinal Maillard de Tournon who was the first papal legate sent to the Imperial court of China, on behalf of the Pope Clement XI. He was born in Turin in 1668 of a noble family of Savoy.Tournon and his party sailed by way of Pondicherry, Manila and Canton, arriving at Beijing in December 1705. At first Emperor Kangxi received him kindly, but upon realising that he had come to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians he had Tournon imprisoned at Macau where he later died, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on August 1, 1707. Maillard de Tournon's mission is considered one of the crucial turning points in the modern history of the Chinese church. The two additional works are: "Verba per ... Clementem Papam XI. Habita in consistorio secreto fer. IV.14. Octobris 1711" (pp. 39-47); and Carlo Majelli's "Oratio habita in sacello pontifico V. Kal. Decembris A.D. M.DCC.XI" (pp. 48-70). Cordier BS 913-14. Backer & Sommervogel xi, 1285-6, no. 206 (who calls for 38 pages only = the first part).

SINOLOGUS BEROLINENSIS (Pseud.): Remarques philologiques sur les voyages en Chine de M. De Guignes. Berlin, aux frais de l'auteur et se trouve chez H.J. Hitzig [and others], Printed by Jean Frédéric Starcke, 1809.
. Pp. (ii), 168. With engraved frontispiece. Uncut copy in original printed wrappers, spine split. Bookplate (G.M. La Fragette). A work written by Montucci under his pseudonym which identifies more than two hundred linguistic errors in de Guignes' Voyages (1808). This was part of Montucci's maneuvre to persuade the French government to remove de Guignes from the editorship of the planned Chinese dictionary in favour of himself. Montucci, a renowned Italian sinologist, was obsessed with the idea of writing a Chinese dictionary. He had over 20 000 characters cut at his own expense which were subsequently bought by the Vatican, together with his collection of Chinese books. At one time Montucci was considered for editorship of the French-Chinese dictionary, but in the end preference was given to de Guignes. The work is preceded by a laudatory letter addressed to Antonio Montucci written by himself (under his pseudonym). In a postscript, the author provides information about the Chinese characters used in his work which is repeated at the end of a checklist. Scarce. Cordier BS 1711. Lust 994. Löwendahl 744. [DOTY, ELIHU]:
Some thoughts on the Proper Term, to be Employed to Translate Elohim and Theos, into Chinese: By an American Missionary in China. Shanghai, the Mission Press, 1850.
. Pp. 28. With printed Chinese characters. Original printed wrappers, soiled. This paper is a contribution to the contemporary missionary debate about the translation of the Christian concept of God into the Chinese language. Elihu Doty identifies the characters shang and ti most suitable for this. "Among the many intriguing episodes of the early Protestant missionary experience in China, none attracted as much attention or generated as much controversy as the 'Term Question'. Beginning as a simple difference of opinion over the most appropriate Chinese expressions to use for the English words 'God' and 'spirit' in translation of the Bible, the issue eventually split the missionary community into contending factions and brought a dramatic end to the united theological front that had hitherto shaped Protestant efforts to win the final victory for Christianity in China". Lazich (2000), p. 253.Elihu Doty (1809-64) was an American missionary who served in Singapore and Pontianak before moving to Amoy, where he remained from 1844 to 1858. Cordier BS 1283. Lust 951. [THOM, ROBERT] (Compiler):
... Yishi Yuyan. Esop's Fables Written in Chinese by the Learned Mun Mooy Seen-Shang, and Compiled in their Present Form (With a free and literal translation) by His Pupil Sloth. Macao, Canton Press Office, 1840.
. Folio. Pp. (ix), xxi, (iv), 104. With one lithographed plate of Chinese characters. Text in English, Chinese and romanisations in the Nanking and Cantonese dialects. Early 20th century cloth with original wrappers bound in. Small marginal repair to title (no loss). Rare first edition of Thom's translation of ®sop's fables into Chinese. It comprises 81 fables (Yu-yen) preceded by a long preface and an introduction about the written Chinese characters. The short stories are printed in Chinese characters (woodblock) accompanied by the mandarin pronunciation of Nanking (Roman letters) and the Canton dialect (italics). Both according to Dr. Morrison's orthography. In another column a free English translation is given together with an English "direct translation" of the Chinese characters. Robert Thom came to China in 1834 and initially worked for the trading house Jardine, Matheson & Co. at Canton. He was the official linguist during the First Opium war and participated as translator in the Treaty negotiations at Nanking. In 1843 he was appointed British consul at Ningbo. He dedicates this work to William Jardine, James Matheson and Henry Wright "by whose bounty the entire expense of his Chinese education was defrayed". According to the preface this translation of the fables was selected from various old sources such as Phaedrus, Avanius, Barlandus, etc. Thom dictated the fables, in mandarin Chinese, to his native teacher Mun Mooy Seen-Shang who wrote them down in a simple style called "ts‹-luh", the lowest and easiest form of Chinese composition. The first sellection of the stories was published in 1837-8 and was well received by the Chinese. "They had their run of the Public Courts and Offices - until the Mandarins - taking offence at seeing some of their evil customs so freely canvassed - ordered the work to be suppressed. ... The application was once perceived - and the justice of the remark admitted immediately" (Preface). The western tradition of using fables in education and preaching indirectly paved the way for their transmission to China. In the 17th century the Jesuits adapted and used ®sop's fables in their Chinese sermonic works. The fables came to influence and challenge the traditional Chinese way of writing fictitious stories that had always been based on true historical events. (See Diss.: Wu, Pei-Lin "Aesop's fables in China, the transmission and transformation of the genre" (Illinois). Cordier BS 1683. Lust 1065. See: Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British and Foreign India, China and Australasia. Vol. XXXVI - new series. Sept. - Dec. 1841. pp. 182-3.

Yu zhi geng zhi tu (Imperially Commissioned Illustrations of Agriculture and Sericulture). Two volumes. Shanghai, Dian shi zhai, Guangxu 5 (1879).
. Comprises two volumes; the first is devoted to rice cultivation and the other to silk production. Title and preface in Chinese, and preface and content in French. Lvs. 49 + 49, double folded in the oriental fashion. With 46 lithographic double-page illustrations with printed Chinese poems included. Translations into English and French are added on pages in between. A few leaves with minor staining in the silk volume. Original decorated silk covers, one green and the other purple. "Gengzhi tu" (Pictures of Tilling and Weaving) was originally compiled by Lou Shou in the twelfth century comprising illustrations of rice cultivation and silk production. Agriculture and silk making held a special place in China and both occupations were regarded as paramount for the well-being of the state. In 1696 a famous version of this work was edited by Jiao Bingzhen. It was titled "Yu shi geng zhi tu" because the poems were written by the Kangxi emperor. This is a lithographed version published almost two hundred years later. A very good set of a charming and interesting work of ancient Chinese workmanship.

. Tall 8vo. Pp. xxii, 240. Includes the Chinese title printed on yellow paper. With two folding lithographed plates. Half morocco on marbled boards, spine with five raised bands and title lettered in gilt. Bookplate. Second edition (first 1822) enlarged with a table "des principales phonétiques chinoises" devised by Leon de Rosny. Abel Rémusat's grammar was the first usable Chinese grammar printed in Europe. Unlike previous grammars he did not try to impose any of the common categories of Indo-European languages on the Chinese languages he described. Abel-Rémusat distinguishes carefully between classical or literary Chinese and the vernacular based on Mandarin. The two languages are treated in two different sections; "Style antique" respectively "Style moderne". However the last section with analyses of the vernacular is more elaborated and valuable than the classical part. Alain Peyraube: "Some reflections on the sources of the Mashi Wentong" pp. 345-46.
