He was the second child of a poor family and had eight siblings. Samuel became a missionary, spending five years in Zanzibar before returning to England to study for the priesthood. Sadly he died before he could realise his ambition. This book was first compiled in 1876 from letters written by and about Samuel Speare. The original editor was Revd. Thomas Wilkinson then curate of Rickinghall Superior and later Bishop of Zululand.

Navy blue leather binding. 6.0" x 4.0" x 0.75". Gilt title to front board. Recent endpapers. Old note-paper cutting laid-down to the verso of the front board: "William Speare, 30 Gosford Rd. Beccles, Sfk." Also, to the verso of the front board is a recent adhesive address label: "5 Dolphin Close, Pakefield Lowestoft, Suffolk". Lacks half-title and title-page.
